There is a lake where a beautiful creature lives. It keeps an eye on lilies and fish and looks after children playing in the water. They say, long ago there was a monster who settled in the lake. Villagers came there to fetch some water, to swim or to wash cloths and not all of them got back home. Some said, they have seen a wonderful horse on the lake’s shore. It had luxuriant mane which was always wet and covered with algae or water plants - and its eyes were so magnetic that it was almost impossible to stop staring into them. It seemed like the horse was making its back, calling you for a ride or at least to pet its glossy skin. But there was no one to tell not to do that: as you touch the horse even with a finger, it sticks tightly to it and the creature makes its way to the water on a single frisk drowning its victim. Another strange thing was, no matter how many people would like to take a ride on the creature at once, there is a place for each of them on its back; and the next stop is always the same - on the lake’s bottom. Sometimes there was no horse but a young dark-haired lady in green cloths wearing inside out. She sat near the lake, her face sad, and sometimes called people to come and help her, sang beautiful songs in some unknown language or just looked into the water. Some people were angry to have such a weird neighbor, some were threatened, and nobody knew what to do until one day a traveler came to their village. After hearing what’s happening here, he told it’s obviously a kelpie, a water spirit living in lakes and rivers. It’s not malicious by its nature and there is the way to tame it as everything could harm or kill you if you treat it wrong. He helped to create an enchanted necklace, a dragonfly on a golden chain as a gift for the lady of the lake. Then he flung it round the creature’s neck whispering a spell into its ears. Since then, no one has been ever hurt by the kelpie.
