It was time for Birchpaw to finally become an apprentice.
Everyone had their eyes on her when Ratstar called her name. He gave her to Honeyheart, his mate; she hadn't had an apprentice in moons.

The calico she-cat stepped forward to welcome Birchpaw as her apprentice, though everyone knew who would be truly mentoring the young apprentice.
'Good luck, Birchpaw', Honeyheart said, giving her a soft but sad smile.
