Description The equestrian statue in Buda Castle celebrating the victory of Prince Eugen von Savoy over the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Zenta (1697) created by Jószef Róna for the town where the battle took place. However, it ended up in Budapest because Zenta could not afford the monument. It was supposed to be a placeholder until a statue of Emperor Franz-Joseph could be put up: however, after the troubles of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, that never happened, and so Prinz Eugen, known in song as 'der Edle Ritter' (the noble knight) still overlooks the town of Pest from the castle of Buda, with vanquished Turkish soldiers at this feat.

Boy, I always wondered how the S.M.S. Prinz Eugen got its name. Learned something new today!

Always glad to be of assistance! Yes, sadly Prinz Eugen isn't very well known, these days. Actually, most of the Habsburg Monarchy seems to have been forgotten about, except for Sissi and the assassination of Franz-Ferdinand.

It seems unfair that a large portion of important figures in history are forgotten about. The next time I visit the library I'll keep an eye out for Prinz Eugen.
It may have something to do with international events, or it was overshadowed by another power.

Prince Eugen became rather popular with the 19th-century-nationalism, which isn't too popular these days. Add to this that the situation on the Balkans, where Austria-Hungary fought against the Turks, became such that most people preferred not to be reminded about it, and the general decline in the popularity of war-heroes after too many people learned what war meant, and you end up with people like Prince Eugen being relegated to footnotes. Or statues in Budapest and Vienna...

Thanks! Great melody, that. I'd known it before, but with a different text (and used by Carl Loewe): gutenberg.spiegel.de/buch/ferd…
