In all honesty, NGE is a very good anime that I highly recommend (yes, even the rebuilds... Maybe not EoE, though).The characters are all depressingly troubled , the mechas are kickass , the enemies ("Angels") are cool and scary-ish , and there is actually plenty of development (both plot, character, and setting).
The original series has okay-*iish* dubbing, but they get the point across.
Rebuild's Ramiel and Zeruel are the best angels in my opinion.
