Description
I have film privileges!!Okay, now that that is out of my system, here is a tutorial I did a few days ago, after reading a news article about the new film categories. I'm still working on my wedding stuff, and thought, "hey, there won't be another time I'm for sure working on a ruffle, so I should try to film what to do and make a tutorial."
And I did.
Please forgive a few things:
Random note:
I'm not going to walk you through everything step by step - this should be enough information to get you to make a ruffle for anything you might need; please don't ask to film how to make the fabric piece (it's a god-awful long rectangle, with finished edges) or the petticoat it's on - some day, I might, but right now, no time for that, I'm sorry.
My goal : to give you the techniques to do what you want to do, not hold your hand through it all
Anywho, I'm sorry again about my voice, editing, and whatnot. But, I hope you learn something from this, and if you use the tutorial, please let me know! I appreciate it every time someone shows me a piece one of my tutorials helped out with, I really, really do!

THANK YOU! I already have made tons of ruffle using the parallel threads way, but like you said, one always breaks or something! It's such a nightmare! This method seems so much more reliable since the heavier cotton gets the stress of pulling, not the tiny threads.
I'm about to make a really short petticoat/ruffly skirt using your tutorial, so I'm glad I could find this video. Thank you for posting so many wonderful things!

I once gathered an entire petticoat by hand. The bottom tier--it was 3 tiers total--was at about 24 feet long. It was a very lightweight muslin, but none the less, the basting didn't work so well for me so by the end of it I just sat there and did it by hand. Over. And over. And over. Until I thought it looked even enough and sewed it down.
If only I had this then.

I hate when I start to loose my glasses when I'm sewing.
My glasses have a habit of falling off my face making me crawl around blindly for them.
This video is so helpful! Thank you so much for all of your tutorials!

I should add: Fishing line also works for this sort of ruffling. (Although I'll admit, ruffling in any form is a pain in the backside.)

I'm happy to hear it! I'm trying to do more video tutorials, but I have a rather large collection of one's I've made for various techniques that may help you out!
If you're new to sewing, I recommend picking up a simple, "1 hour dress" pattern, or something like that, to get the hang of it And, the best book I've ever used for sewing (when I get stuck, or need to figure something out, or just plain forget how to do something) is this one: [link]
And, if you have any questions, I'm always happy to help how I can - I may be slow to respond to notes, but I try to help when I can

You totally should! It's rather fun (and, if you hate it, don't completely write it off - I hated sewing for most of my life when my mother tried to teach me, and it took until I was 18 or so before it actually "clicked," despite my mother trying to teach me every year or so )

ha ha ha! I don' think I'll hate it. Its just more of a matter of not getting too frustrated with myself and finding some good beginner's sources. I can do simple hand stitching fairly well, but I really want to learn how to use sewing machines and patterns.

Wow, I've never thought about zig-zagging before! Thanks. I always make ruffles by stuffing the fabric right under the needle (euh... if you know what I meant), but I had to do that for five (or something) times, because it wouldn't hold for very long
Thanks!

Yeah! It's under film - I believe you still have to apply, and they are very strict on what you can and can't post (including what you can use and what you can't, in terms of copyright material/music and stuff like that) but you definitely can! There are some utterly amazing animators here, you should check it out!

FABRIC ATTACK! great tut! I wish my sewing machine wasn't busted so I could try this out (I am currently using my grandma's old one that can't do a zig zag stitch, or go backwards
) again, really awesome tut : )

Aww! I hope you can get yours fixed soon I know how bad it is to be without a machine that can do those things - my regular home machine is in the shop, and I have no idea when I'm going to get it back, which leaves me with my industrial (which thankfully does go backwards...) but no zig-zag
I just hope that, once your machine is back, you get to try it out!

Just curious, since I'm a super fashion noob, what do you do with the thread at the end of the enormous zigzag stitch to keep it from falling apart?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to Vivacci [2010-02-16 17:00:00 +0000 UTC]
I'm not exactly sure what you mean Eventually, it gets sewn down to whatever you are making the huge ruffle for, and (ideally) you should remove the crochet cotton to remove the bulk, but otherwise, it's just the sewing it down that holds it in place - if the other end has a habit of sliding out when you try to gather it up, I think I show how I secure it around a pin, but it's basically a figure 8 around a regular pin to just keep it from being lost in the madness

Vivacci In reply to taeliac [2010-02-17 03:14:35 +0000 UTC]
Oops! I meant when you've finished with the stitch! Haha, my bad. Like if you want to finish up, do you just sew it into the cloth? You're not supposed to tie or or anything, right?
