Description I have film privileges!!

Okay, now that that is out of my system, here is a tutorial I did a few days ago, after reading a news article about the new film categories. I'm still working on my wedding stuff, and thought, "hey, there won't be another time I'm for sure working on a ruffle, so I should try to film what to do and make a tutorial."

And I did.

Please forgive a few things:

1. My voice. I hate how it sounds.

2. My nervous twitches in the second half. I know, I have a lot of them - if you know me, be amazed that I even had the guts to film this, because I hate being in front of people. If you've seen my panels at conventions, you'll notice that I'm like this all the time.

3. That it's so long. I don't know how to cut the size down, or cut out stuff. I just set up the camera (took a good 10 minutes to get the tripod set up right each time), and hit the button, and started talking. If you're really annoyed at the time, the first part is what you'll really need to know, the rest (last 10 minutes or so) is just stuff you can figure out yourself.

4. That I ramble. A lot. I didn't have a script - hell, I didn't have an idea of what I was going to do until just a minute or three before I actually hit the record button.

5. If something goes out of sync - I was looking at the preview thing in iMovie, and when in fullscreen mode, the second half is off of sync or something, but when I moved it back down to a smaller version, it was fine... I don't get it, and I'm so sorry if it looks like poo... I have never, ever done anything with film before, so I'm a total n00b!

Random note:
I'm not going to walk you through everything step by step - this should be enough information to get you to make a ruffle for anything you might need; please don't ask to film how to make the fabric piece (it's a god-awful long rectangle, with finished edges) or the petticoat it's on - some day, I might, but right now, no time for that, I'm sorry.

My goal : to give you the techniques to do what you want to do, not hold your hand through it all

Anywho, I'm sorry again about my voice, editing, and whatnot. But, I hope you learn something from this, and if you use the tutorial, please let me know! I appreciate it every time someone shows me a piece one of my tutorials helped out with, I really, really do!

I saw this on google and I was sad to find that it wasn't a complete video, so I search your DA since it was in the description and I found it!

I just started a costume designing class and for a final project we have to make a whole outfit and I wanted it to also be a cosplay outfit for FanimeCon 2010 that I would use ruffles for, but I had no idea how to make ruffles, so this helps a lot! THANK YOU!

You know, I never thought to put the full tutorials up on google video or YouTube or anything like that - I think I should, though, especially if they'd help people out more!!

Oooh! That is a very cool final project - we never got to pick what we made, it was all show production work or period reproductions or whatever sewing techniques we needed to show on a large scale - I wish I could have had something do double-duty! I hope you can get it done - if you ever get stuck with sewing questions, I'm always more than happy to help how I can

Oh my gosh We are such kindered spirits.
I HATe ruffles becasue of the last part and As I watch you give the cord a tug and WHALA! Ruffles! Instantly! Well almost anyway!
Seriously This is so exciting. See I want to make one of those fun gyspy style patchwork skirts but the ruffling has been so scary for me I haven't even started cutting squares! Now I feel like I can do it! (Once I have some time of course!)

taeliac In reply to Eliea [2010-03-15 08:42:56 +0000 UTC]

I'm so glad it's not just me, then!!

I know, I always break the threads, because I'm a dork like that (read: I'm impatient, and just want there to be ruffles now!)

You really need to make that skirt! It would be so cool! And, if you wanted to do tiers in the skirt, so it gets insanely full, you can easily use this to gather up each tier to make an obscenely full skirt

I think it was from JoAnn Fabrics, but about 4 years ago I buy too much fabric and stash it for later

Very helpful. I know that they're commercially producing strips of material that include a string that you sew onto the hem (like curtains)- but theyre expensive, and bulky, so its great to know how to replicate the look. Oh and i agree - the two thread pulling system is VERY annoying.
Thank yoU!

Really? I've never seen those available, but I can imagine how much they'd charge for something like that ^^

I'm always happy to help however I can Too many handy little tricks I've learned in theatre, which I like to share whenever I can (I had the happy opportunity to work with a lady who knows every trick in the book for shortcuts )

QueenOfCostumes In reply to taeliac [2009-11-13 01:15:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah its really helpful. I used to be into costuming but never knew how to sew properly... Someone told me that you can also have a similar technique from using straight stitch and making the tension uneven so that it pulls automatically. Ring a bell? I never knew how to make it work properly.

taeliac In reply to QueenOfCostumes [2009-11-13 03:16:18 +0000 UTC]

I've heard that one, too, but I've never actually gotten it to work correctly whenever I've tried - maybe it's just a certain type of machine that does it more readily than others? I think I want to try it on my industrial, just to see...

Otherwise, ruffle foot attachments are pretty common for most sewing machines, and that can save a lot of time, even if they're a little expensive (if you plan on doing a lot of ruffles on something...)

Have I mentioned my eternal love for your work lately?
Also, you're better at vids than I am. The first time I did a video of myself, I alternated between a string of 3-4 rambled sentences and 4-5 minute silences,

I really wanted to thank you. The night before A-kon, I remembered that I was supposed to finish a petticoat for a friend. I had only made one before, and it had taken me several days and tears to make. Luckily a friend had sent me a link to your tutorial a few months before, and because of your method I was able to finish the petticoat in time, and still got to sleep that night! Thank you soo much for posting this!

I love your voice. <3 You should think about voice acting some time. ; ]

Thank you so much for this! It's gonna be a big help for cosplays I'm planning on making this month. : D

I have one question though:

How much longer do you suggest the fabric you're ruffling should be compared to the actual, say, waiste length? Maybe twice as long, or something?

HOLY CRAP THAT LOOKS EASY!

I hate gathers because the parallel stitches always stick and cut into my fingers and generally suck. But this looks like it's actually fun!

taeliac In reply to AerithReborn [2009-04-18 05:06:53 +0000 UTC]

It's so incredibly easy to do! And, I hear you about the sticking out and being such a pain - they just seem to be like that, unless you're doing something smaller like poofy sleeves (done a lot of poofy sleeves lately )

I hope you find it that easy!!

AerithReborn In reply to taeliac [2009-04-18 06:29:00 +0000 UTC]

Funny you should comment... I just used your technique on a skirt I stitched up today ^^. I still have a problem distributing the gathers, but it was SO MUCH EASIER to do. My fingers weren't red and sore afterwards. Thank you so much for posting this little trick!

I'll be abusing this technique in the very near future... oh boy oh boy
