Description I have film privileges!!

Okay, now that that is out of my system, here is a tutorial I did a few days ago, after reading a news article about the new film categories. I'm still working on my wedding stuff, and thought, "hey, there won't be another time I'm for sure working on a ruffle, so I should try to film what to do and make a tutorial."

And I did.

Please forgive a few things:

1. My voice. I hate how it sounds.

2. My nervous twitches in the second half. I know, I have a lot of them - if you know me, be amazed that I even had the guts to film this, because I hate being in front of people. If you've seen my panels at conventions, you'll notice that I'm like this all the time.

3. That it's so long. I don't know how to cut the size down, or cut out stuff. I just set up the camera (took a good 10 minutes to get the tripod set up right each time), and hit the button, and started talking. If you're really annoyed at the time, the first part is what you'll really need to know, the rest (last 10 minutes or so) is just stuff you can figure out yourself.

4. That I ramble. A lot. I didn't have a script - hell, I didn't have an idea of what I was going to do until just a minute or three before I actually hit the record button.

5. If something goes out of sync - I was looking at the preview thing in iMovie, and when in fullscreen mode, the second half is off of sync or something, but when I moved it back down to a smaller version, it was fine... I don't get it, and I'm so sorry if it looks like poo... I have never, ever done anything with film before, so I'm a total n00b!

Random note:
I'm not going to walk you through everything step by step - this should be enough information to get you to make a ruffle for anything you might need; please don't ask to film how to make the fabric piece (it's a god-awful long rectangle, with finished edges) or the petticoat it's on - some day, I might, but right now, no time for that, I'm sorry.

My goal : to give you the techniques to do what you want to do, not hold your hand through it all

Anywho, I'm sorry again about my voice, editing, and whatnot. But, I hope you learn something from this, and if you use the tutorial, please let me know! I appreciate it every time someone shows me a piece one of my tutorials helped out with, I really, really do!

Well, I try to keep it under control - one of my professors would have flayed us if we started swearing, so that's why the sound effects are ingrained in me

Thank you so much for this tutorial I don't cosplay but I do try to sew once in a while and the 2 thread thing never seems to work for me either. I would love for you to do a video demo of your centered zipper tutorial. Zippers have ended my sewing career at present.

No problem!! These things can easily be adopted to a lot of various sewing things, which is always cool

And, that is a fantastic idea!! I'll definitely keep it in mind ~ I just put in a zipper in a skirt, I wish I would have thought of doing it then XP Next time

I'm so happy to hear that! I agree - I just busted threads working on a skirt yesterday, and then did it this way, and it worked, so... yeah! Gathers in skirts can be done this way, too, apparently

(I don't know if you already got the message about the ruffle fabric length... or if it became and annotation...)

Basically what I said in the first message that I wrote was that you're amazing and that I'm confused about how much fabric to use to make the ruffles? is it the same size as the bottom of the skirt or do you have more fabric to be able to do the ruffles? I'm making sure that I have the right amount of fabric so that I don't end up with my skirt having ruffles on one side and none on the other (though I suppose I could just put two pieces of ruffles together... *sigh*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Negumi [2009-02-04 18:05:25 +0000 UTC]

I already responded to the other one, but I'm gonna flood your inbox in case someone else sees this with the same question

You will defintiely need more fabric for the ruffles than the hem of your skirt - usually, for "moderate" fullness, I like using 2.5x the hem of your skirt for the ruffle fabric. For very full ruffles, I like using about 4x the hem of your skirt (so, if your skirt hem is 40" around, you're going to want to use about 160" of fabric for your ruffles - you can cut them in strips and sew them together, so it's really not as much fabric as you'd think... for, say 6" wide ruffles, you would need about a yard to make the 160" of ruffles~)

Sew the strips of fabric together first, and then ruffle them all up (it's what I did in my example, there are about 8 strips of 45" wide fabric sewn together, end to end, that was then ruffled and sewn to the skirt~)

Negumi [2009-02-03 01:57:05 +0000 UTC]

O.O You are so amazing!

I just noticed that my mum has crochet thread in the house in like bulks! (she doesn't even crochet ) I just have one question in regards to the ruffles, how much bigger to the skirt does it have to be? Since you're gathering the fabric up it would mean that the ruffle fabric has to be a lot bigger than the skirt right?

I'm new at the ruffles so I just want to make sure that I have the right amount so that when I do the skirt I don't end up with only half of it having ruffles and the other have being without it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Negumi [2009-02-04 18:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Well, the length that you start with is completely up to you - for "moderate" ruffles, I've found that 2.5x the bottom hem of the skirt is really nice, but for really full one's, I like to do 4x the bottom hem (so, if the bottom of my skirt is 40" around, I would need 160" of ruffles, with a little bit more for seam allowance and "fluff room" if you mess up a bit, cuz I always do)

I'll try to do samples to show everyone what the various ruffle amounts look like (how full 2x is compared to 2.5x to 3x to 4x... that sort of thing) when I'm working on them next But, since you're gathering it to fit the skirt, you can be off by a bit and it doesn't really matter (if that makes sense... you're making the ruffle fit, whether it's exact or not!)

I sure hope that essay makes sense

Hrm... I think it might be - my friend has a machine like that that she sews on, and was able to do this, but I'm not positive. I don't know what it is, but every time I try to do ruffles like that, I wind up snapping the threads, but it might be that I'm just too impatient to do it well

Ohgosh, this is SO helpful. I am veryveryvery happy to have discovered this. You, madam, are a DEMIGODDESS. You're very funny and helpful, and you described this so well. I've only used a sewing machine once in my entire life so far (yay home ec class) but I understood what you meant and I had a very easy time following along with what you saying. It definitely stayed in my head, and here's to hoping it WILL stay there. (If not, I've bookmarked and fav'd this, so we're good anyway. >>;; ) You did a really fantastic job with this, once again. Thank you sooo much for this mthod. It's gonna help SO much. x33~

I'm so happy to hear that it's helpful!!

Ha! I remember sewing in home ec, and I hated it with a passion It really is much more fun to be able to make costumes, and really gets you learn how to use it

I'm so happy to hear, too, that it stuck with you and was easy to follow - I'm always so paranoid I'm gonna ramble like nothing else (quite like what I think I'm doing now, come to think of it...)

I'm glad to help! If you do start sewing again, and need some help, let me know! I'll do everything I can to help you out!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Korogaiku In reply to taeliac [2009-01-15 01:48:40 +0000 UTC]

I never would have pegged you as a home-ec hater! That's such a surprise! xDD But if that's the case, there is hope for me yet! (I totally think I just spouted about fifteen flowers from different places. xDDD) I've gotta admit, though, you really are right about doing things at your own pace and on your own time. I didn't like sewing much, but I tried making my own costume before, and it was a lot more interesting than just making a drawstring bag... xDD

But I'm very glad my comment meant something. <333 Neeeever be afraid about rambling (which you totally didn't do then and aren't doin' now; I should know xDDDD!). You said it just as it needed to be said, and you made it fun and full of smiles, which everyone loves. It's... reeeeally not fun to just hear someone in monotone going "Now, Mistah Wazowski, make sure you keep it like this, and gradually do things in this specific ordah with..." That puts people to sleep like nooothin' else, and you made that SO much fun and SO lively, and I giggled several times and told people to be quiet so I could totally focus on it. It was fantastic, really and truly. xDDD

...And now I feel so honored, I think I'm about this close to fainting. I'm such a novice. xDD; It would be absolutely fantastically perfect if I could get your opinion on future sewing projects (especially since I plan to make, like, two cosplays this upcoming... sometime this year ) so I could learn and know what I'm doing wrong. As helpful as trial-and-error is, friendly critique is absolutely godly, and I don't think I could be any more honored than right now. Totally happy and absolutely thrilled here. xDDD (Though, I'd probably be too shy. >>;;; Surprised I'm talking as much as I am now... I rarely ramble this much to awesome people. xDDD;; ) Really, though, I truly appreciate your offer and your nice words. It means so much. <333

Aaand I hope I didn't kill you with this totally silly and badly-worded comment. xx;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Korogaiku [2009-01-15 01:54:15 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, you'd be surprised - I hated sewing (my mother tried to teach me repeatedly growing up) until I was like... 17 or so? Yeah... then it all just kind of clicked and I really liked it It's the costumes, I swear, that make it so much more enjoyable than just regular generic stuff like they have you doing in school XP

see, that's what's great about sewing - if my school time has taught me anything, it's that there isn't just one way of doing things, and you can do just about anything in any way you want... it really is the end product that matters, and if you learned something making it~

Oooh! What cosplays are you wanting to do? I'll definitely help where I can - a lot of it is just getting to do it, but if I can help even a bit, I would love to Cosplay really is horribly addicting, and I will admit, my favorite thing about them are the challenges that come up... like how to make something defy gravity or stick up or not look like crap on a person (because, I swear, 90% of cosplay, if it was just taken right off of the page, would look horrible on people XP)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Korogaiku In reply to taeliac [2009-01-15 02:20:58 +0000 UTC]

I don't even have any words I can say that'll totally sum up how that first paragraph bitty made me feel. I'm not a hopeless cause yet! Yay! xD; (That sounds so bad, though, so just to clarify, I'm not trying to say that if you don't figure out something right away, it makes that person lame. xX; It's just reeeeally nice to have a hobby or two, methinks.)

It really is great to hear all this, though! I always thought other crafts like sewing or accessorizing (for things like headdresses that aren't exactly... cloth and thread) were to be done by-the-book for the best results and because they weren't flat on paper, they were an entirely different thing that had to be approached like some evilly grumpy lion-dragon-kitty-bunny thing. (Best imagery evur, I say. EVUR. xDDD) But hearing this, it gives me so much hope... xD;

As for the cosplays themselves, my main focus is on the LuckyStar winter uniform ( maybe Tsukasa's hairbow, too, if I can't figure out how to get the same look from just a regular cloth ribbon) and Rena Ryugu's white dress (and hat; darn them people for not makin' the HAT, which will kill me on its own) from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. ...I know; so clichΓ© and commonplace. I must sound so lame. xD; I made a cosplay before, as... I think I mentioned, but it was more of a patch-up, then, so I could get used to things first. Our sewing machine was down, then, too, so it was total handstitching... xD; It turned out okay, except for the few twitches you have to look closer to see, but I'd love to be within like... maybe eighty miles of the awesomeness you've achieved. xD;

In relation to what you said, though, I have to agree. It's hard for me to admit, being such a lame stickler for accuracy as I am (which probably has almost nothing to do with this >~~>;; ), that it just doesn't look right if you don't tweak it some. Like super giant bows and some things like color or texture (like the really shiny squeaky-leather stuff). That'll probably be my biggest problem. The compensation bit. Because I'm too stubborn to admit that something has to change, even if I don't know what I'm doing. xDDD;
