Description I have film privileges!!

Okay, now that that is out of my system, here is a tutorial I did a few days ago, after reading a news article about the new film categories. I'm still working on my wedding stuff, and thought, "hey, there won't be another time I'm for sure working on a ruffle, so I should try to film what to do and make a tutorial."

And I did.

Please forgive a few things:

1. My voice. I hate how it sounds.

2. My nervous twitches in the second half. I know, I have a lot of them - if you know me, be amazed that I even had the guts to film this, because I hate being in front of people. If you've seen my panels at conventions, you'll notice that I'm like this all the time.

3. That it's so long. I don't know how to cut the size down, or cut out stuff. I just set up the camera (took a good 10 minutes to get the tripod set up right each time), and hit the button, and started talking. If you're really annoyed at the time, the first part is what you'll really need to know, the rest (last 10 minutes or so) is just stuff you can figure out yourself.

4. That I ramble. A lot. I didn't have a script - hell, I didn't have an idea of what I was going to do until just a minute or three before I actually hit the record button.

5. If something goes out of sync - I was looking at the preview thing in iMovie, and when in fullscreen mode, the second half is off of sync or something, but when I moved it back down to a smaller version, it was fine... I don't get it, and I'm so sorry if it looks like poo... I have never, ever done anything with film before, so I'm a total n00b!

Random note:
I'm not going to walk you through everything step by step - this should be enough information to get you to make a ruffle for anything you might need; please don't ask to film how to make the fabric piece (it's a god-awful long rectangle, with finished edges) or the petticoat it's on - some day, I might, but right now, no time for that, I'm sorry.

My goal : to give you the techniques to do what you want to do, not hold your hand through it all

Anywho, I'm sorry again about my voice, editing, and whatnot. But, I hope you learn something from this, and if you use the tutorial, please let me know! I appreciate it every time someone shows me a piece one of my tutorials helped out with, I really, really do!

Oh that would be great. You're really great at explaining those things. I tried this technique today with a small piece of cloth and it worked fantastic. I'm gonna use it for doing the ruffles for my next skirt-project

Fantastic! (and everyone hates how their own voice sounds)you soud just great to me.

I have a ruffler attachment for my domestic machine which is pretty good but I just bought a ruffler foot for my industrial and it looks just like a normal foot but it has a thumb screw adjuster at the back. I have no idea how it works - magic I think but for mad ruffles this tutorial is definately the answer!

I know how you feel with the "looks like poop" thing. They never do seem to turn out very well when you double baste. (besides the fact that it's a waste of time and life )

I have a question. Can this technique work with thinner fabric like tulle or net? I feel like it would tear but I haven't tried it so idk. ToT

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to nepty [2008-11-03 17:00:03 +0000 UTC]

It definitely should work - it shouldn't tear, unless you're tension is off on the machine, or you wind up stitching over the thread, or if you pull the thread vertically or just plain violently - if you take your time, it should all be good.

The down side is that with thinner fabric, you're probably not going to want to see the stitching (the zig-zag or the crochet cotton) so you are probably better off with the two basting threads method if you don't want to see the stitches (you remove them after you're done sewing it up).

Excellent tutorial! I'm only missing a few closeups on the techniques you're explaining, but I guess you can't do that, unless you sprout a 3rd arm or hire someone to handle the camera...

So yeah, 2 thumbs up: Keep on making those videos !

PS: did you post a photo of the finished piece? I'd love to see it!

I think you sounded very good, and better than a script because then you didn't have to be searching in your notes. I sing, hum and makes sounds too when I am doing arts and crafts, cooking, cleaning..so it's nothing new to me, in fact I think it makes it more entertaining .

The fabric for the ruffle may have seemed long, but I think it's way better to have it long than too short. (I learned the hard way some years ago that having not enough fabric and then when you gather it for the ruffle it can not match the sides.)

All in all, I thought it is well put together, informative and I wouldn't mind watching/seeing more.

You have inspired me to cover my prom dress in ruffles. oh what a sight that'll be. This was a great tutorial, I never would have considered that stitch (ballet costumers want you to learn the hard way by folding your fabric into ruffles like both romantic and pancake tutu's for everything besides tutu's..... I say that they're freaking outta their minds)

Great tutorial! Big help

That was immensely helpful! I wish this tutorial was around a few years ago when I made the peticoat for a costume... I used cotton and hand pleated it. It took forever! and was heavy as sin...

Thanks so much for making this tutorial, I will remember this method.

How do you upload a dAFilm? I wanted to make a movie based on a book I'm writing and upload it here (cause there are no time restrictions).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to ArionNaomi [2008-10-29 14:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! Well, I definitely hope it helps out if you have to do it again - they do get heavy no matter what, though, I'm sorry to say One I made for school you could probably swing at someone and kill them

As for film, you need to make and upload a piece of film to somewhere like Google Video or YouTube, and then fill out their application - there are some restraints, like, if it's over 20 minutes or 200 megs, you'll need to split it up, but still, definitely not as crazy as YouTube! Omigawd! I love you so much! I was always wondering about how to do ruffles, and I was told that stupid complicated way. So I thought, there has GOT to be an easier way to do this, I so wouldn't be able to memorize the other way. So, this was very helpful in all my future cosplaying needs. And I will send pics, although I'm deathly afraid of cameras... XD I'll do it for you!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Gaaraobssr [2008-10-29 15:05:21 +0000 UTC]

There are definitely times when the other way works, like making less full ruffles look *a lot* better out of the two basting threads method, but when you need something crazy, this is definitely the easiest way to do it

ze-hyper1 In reply to ??? [2008-10-29 00:05:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for this. It is one hell of a lot easier than the two stitches or gathering and pinning it all by hand...

I just wonder... how many yards of the bat fabric was that?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to ze-hyper1 [2008-10-29 15:06:50 +0000 UTC]

*pulls out calculator* 15 yards of 12" wide strips of bat fabric

Not a problem! I know - sometimes, you just need a shortcut You still have to pin the hell out of it, but it's still so much faster to do, and a lot easier (and less swearing/screaming/crying at your project )

Oh girl you are made of all sorts of adorrable!
So, like you're a genius! I hate hate hate gathering because I always break the basting stitched! My mom always yells at me! Now I can't wait to tell her about this! Too bad this wasn't around last week, or I would have just made my petticoat instead of buying it! Ah well, next time! Seriously this is friggin' awsome!
It kept my attention the whole time, was well explained and was entertaining. Good job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Alera [2008-10-28 21:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I learned this from one of my instructors who was a big fan of various tricks to get the job done! And, after much grumbling about gathering threads, she showed us this one!

Aww... I'm sorry! It was technically done a week or so ago, but it took them a while to approve me for film uploads Buying them it still easier, IMO, though...

Sadira-Pookie In reply to ??? [2008-10-28 15:13:12 +0000 UTC]

I was going to agree about the basting stitches breaking. i was working on a bustle last night and swearing my head off because you have to yank the whole thing out and start over. this is REMARKABLE HELPFUL. and i have a ton of crochet thread left over from a belly dance costume, so i'm going to try this!!
