Description I have film privileges!!

Okay, now that that is out of my system, here is a tutorial I did a few days ago, after reading a news article about the new film categories. I'm still working on my wedding stuff, and thought, "hey, there won't be another time I'm for sure working on a ruffle, so I should try to film what to do and make a tutorial."

And I did.

Please forgive a few things:

1. My voice. I hate how it sounds.

2. My nervous twitches in the second half. I know, I have a lot of them - if you know me, be amazed that I even had the guts to film this, because I hate being in front of people. If you've seen my panels at conventions, you'll notice that I'm like this all the time.

3. That it's so long. I don't know how to cut the size down, or cut out stuff. I just set up the camera (took a good 10 minutes to get the tripod set up right each time), and hit the button, and started talking. If you're really annoyed at the time, the first part is what you'll really need to know, the rest (last 10 minutes or so) is just stuff you can figure out yourself.

4. That I ramble. A lot. I didn't have a script - hell, I didn't have an idea of what I was going to do until just a minute or three before I actually hit the record button.

5. If something goes out of sync - I was looking at the preview thing in iMovie, and when in fullscreen mode, the second half is off of sync or something, but when I moved it back down to a smaller version, it was fine... I don't get it, and I'm so sorry if it looks like poo... I have never, ever done anything with film before, so I'm a total n00b!

Random note:
I'm not going to walk you through everything step by step - this should be enough information to get you to make a ruffle for anything you might need; please don't ask to film how to make the fabric piece (it's a god-awful long rectangle, with finished edges) or the petticoat it's on - some day, I might, but right now, no time for that, I'm sorry.

My goal : to give you the techniques to do what you want to do, not hold your hand through it all

Anywho, I'm sorry again about my voice, editing, and whatnot. But, I hope you learn something from this, and if you use the tutorial, please let me know! I appreciate it every time someone shows me a piece one of my tutorials helped out with, I really, really do!

Oh yeah, I feel your pain I hate having to redo everything - although with this one, I did manage later on to break the crochet cotton - luckily, it was towards the end, but still - there is a good 8" of fabric that is just crammed together with pins and then sewn down

It says I need to download the newest flash player.. but I HAVE the newest one already. Any thoughts to putting it on youtube, also? >.>

I had definitely thought of it, but they don't let you upload anything longer than a few minutes... I'll see how compiling it at lower quality, or in two parts, would work, and let you know

Yays! Very cool. I think you did an awesome job. I've heard of using dental floss too, but you have to pull it out unless you like to smell minty.

By the by, I hate my voice too. I think that's a standard thing, unless you're an actor. Then you like to hear yourself...

I had never thought of that. Fabulous, I think I'll pass it along to mum, she likes this method lots!

That's an awesome tutorial!!! And I find your voice very clear! I often have difficulties with oral english because people talks too fast, but you were just perfect! I could understand everything!

Hehe, I used to stutter a lot as a child, so I am sure to talk slowly, otherwise, I'll start doing it again! I'm very, very happy to hear that, thank you so much

Oh, you bet I will!

I'm thinking of a basic "how to lace yourself into a corset" one, because someone else had asked about it a while ago... and I have to plop mine on later anyways!

That's the trick to it You can pretty easily lace yourself into a corset, but for severe tightlacing, you will always need help to be sure everything is even

I do this a lot at work, especially since it's not a good idea to swear in front of customers

(I hurt myself quite a lot, unintentionally, at work, Or drop/spill/break things on accident XD )

I'm glad I'm not the only one - in school, I got all the projects with huge amounts of ruffles (or, later on, trim ) because I loved tacking it on things

i love your voice! don't be silly, i think you are so brave to make a video tutorial! you are my online sewing god, all the fun tutorials are done by you, and this is no exception!

DietCokeFiend In reply to ??? [2008-10-28 05:46:05 +0000 UTC]

I did the ruffling on my skirt o' doom with the thread method. I didn't snap any, but dear god if I did I would have killed someone. I would have done this method if I had cord for it, but I couldn't justify driving half an hour just to buy some. Heh.
But yes, a very nice tutorial. Your voice is just find and the little rambling you think you did just made the video fun to watch. I almost wish I had a camera with video capability now!

taeliac In reply to DietCokeFiend [2008-10-28 14:21:36 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, if you ever are short on cord, I've used dental floss before, too, but it's a lot easier to accidentally sew over than the cording, and if you don't take it out, you smell like mint

I can't believe you did that whole skirt with the thread method

And, thank you very much! I'm always over self conscious, methinks

But seriously, that was awesome. What a good idea for doing ruffles!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to LadyJamie [2008-10-28 21:24:52 +0000 UTC]

You totally have to sing and sew to stay sane! And, make sound effects... this one didn't have any sound effects to describe what to do, but I'm sure they'll pop up eventually...

YukiTheWindMaster In reply to ??? [2008-10-28 05:00:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so, much I hate doing the bating because the strings always break, are like you said "it looks like poop"

I'll defiantly use this method next time.

And yay I'm not the only one that sings wile they sew lol

Aww... I'm sorry you have to hand gather them - although, I find that to be easier (and less nerve wracking) than the double-basting-line thing

Mebbe it will help for something else in the future

Amazing tutorial, Sam! And I don't think your voice is annoying either, or that you have to worry about boring the panel audience at conventions (you can always ask them to spice it up for you a bit if it gets too dull, I'm sure a little commentary would be comical) ^^

I might have to try something like this when I have a little more money, it sounds so fun to do!
