Description

Another bit of ol' lore from 90s Power Rangers. These are a couple versions of Lord Zedd's Dark Rangers in the first two rows, then my own redesign on the very bottom.

The first row is what the show had. These are, ya know, rough. The weird lil gimpy masks, the straight-lined Z designs, the blank belts, the short gloves and boots. It's just very very bad.

The second/middle row is what the old 90s comics showed. Now, apparently there's only the single picture of what their helmets look like and nothing else. So I tried. I really don't like them at all, and as far as I can tell, there's no clear animal or dinosaur motifs. I know it was the thing MMPR did in the old 90s comics, 90s toys, and the original movie having the power coin symbol right in the center, but I don't love it. And from the one reference pic, the costumes could've changed a bit more.

The third and final row is my redesign, trying to merge the two versions. I've gotta give a couple shoutouts to RiderB0y and everyfaces for their versions of a similar redesign/combo, here www.deviantart.com/riderb0y/ar… and here www.deviantart.com/everyfaces/… I really appreciate those rad designs and wanted to try my hand at using similar inspirations with different results. I think I've managed a unique thing!

With my redesign here, my biggest things were to make their helmets more uniform than what the comic had, to make the helmets more "Lord Zedd-y" (lots of silver and a red visor), and to change up the chests a bunch. The show version's chests having such a simple straight-lined Z shape annoys me, so I wanted to make something a bit more dynamic and angled, and making some better use of the diamond shape. I did put the basic straight Z on their morphers tho. The comic also gave pink some weird spikey shoulder bits (which I ignored here in the second row b/c I didn't like it), but that combined with w/e the show's shoulder straps were supposed to be gave me the thought of making some shoulder pieces. These shoulder pieces and their collars are individualized to their motifs...which I need to mention.

Looking at the 90s comic helmets, I couldn't get out of of my head that Blue looked a bit alien or gill-man, Yellow's visor looked almost bat-like, Red and Black looked generically "monster". With that in mind, I turned to classic movie monsters for this redesign: Red is a werewolf, he gets a dog collar type design with spikes, has teeth on his visor, sharp ears and tufts of hair; Blue is a gill-man, keeping close to the 90s comic design but with curved spines on his collar and shoulders; Black is Frankenstein's monster, gets a bit bulkier design with "stitches" on his collar, larger screws on the side of his collar, and machined-looking shoulder armor; Pink also keeps close to the comic design, but is a mummy with a wrapping/cloth pattern on her collar and shoulders with "threads" falling loose; Yellow follows what I saw in the bat shape of the 90s comic design and is a vampire with bat wings on her shoulders and collar (which then gives are a higher-necked collar), and bat-like ears on her helmet. Plus, the monster inspiration makes more sense to me insomuch as Lord Zedd can be the comparable devil/skeleton/grim reaper and Rita Repulsa can be the comparable witch.

I do plan to make the recent Boom Comics versions of the Dark Rangers. I don't love the "baddies become Rangers" thing so much, but the designs do look neat. I'm not planning to make them immediately, but I will provide a link below when I've made them.
