funny how it feels like home a photograph of a place so distant... it reminds me of the Pelourinho, at Salvador... here in Brazil

You're from Salvador? That's one of my favourite places to have visited.

Fascinating image! I can see the reference to San Fran made in another comment. You seem to have taken it from quite a high vantage point (level with the street lamps), or is that just the effect of shooting at 130mm (ie higher up the hill and a long way from the subject)? Just trying to learn to understand different shots...

I'm just standing at the top of the hill (don't underestimate how steep that hill is!) The 130mm really foreshortens distance. That shot took me a long time, I was there for a good couple of hours watching that tram going up and down. There was something about that view that I really liked if I could only find the picture. I tried standing in all sorts of different places and getting the tram from lots of different angles. It was a hard composition because thereβs so much going on. I didnβt get the stunning shot that I was looking for, itβs there I just couldnβt find it but Iβm happy with this one all the same.
It was raining on and off so the light was very flat which didnβt help (I didnβt know it could rain in Lisbon for so many consecutive days!).

Yes, I suspected you were at the top of the hill and that the 130mm was foreshortening the image. And I see just what you mean about the flatness of the light taking the 'bang' out of the image. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you went back there sometime in great light and found the elusive stunning shot. Mind you, the jumble of overhead cables and street lights doesn't help; they kind of pull the eye away from the subject a bit...

I love trams! here in Milan we are full of trams and every time I see one around the world, I feel a little at home!
Your masterful photo means a lot for me! thank you.

Ah well, it's probably like most countries, so many different faces. This is one of the older parts of Lisbon. Lisbon itself is built on some pretty steep hills.
