Description
In some dark, forgotten corner of the NATO CENTCOM main headquarters buried deep within Olympus Mons, across from the geologic survey branch, the understaffed exobiology department toils away. With only one full-time scientist in its employ, Dr. Erin Kaminsky, the department was proposed as a sort of in-situ SETI during the early years of interstellar travel. However, it quickly decayed into a mere formality. The scanning of rock samples is now an artifact of regulations set in place before Humanity gave up the dream of discovering life among the stars. In the three hundred years since faster than light drives enabled rapid exploration and expansion, only hints of soil bacteria - which the mainstream scientific community insists are simply rock formations - have ever been uncovered.
Still, the search continues, if unenthusiastically. Regulations insist that samples be scanned before large-scale colonization or terraforming can begin - a measure to ensure that Humanity does not inadvertently destroy a nascent biosphere, or worse, one which we fail to recognize as life at all.
For Kaminsky, the only exobiologist working for CENTCOM, the search had been frustrating. Endless paperwork. Hundreds of samples. No results. Just an empty lab, a never-used quarantine wing, and only the hum of the Cray Z-MP supercomputer to keep her company. That and the beetles which flew into her coffee with alarming frequency, a remnant of the terraforming operations on Mars. Their natural preclusion for avoiding direct sunlight often lead them to her dimly-lit section of the facility.
The odds favored finding something eventually, she would remind herself. Whether it was to be found in her lifetime, or the lifetime of the species, was up for debate. For now Kaminsky would have to settle for wanting to believe.

Hehehe, she's got the kind of job I wish I had. Though if I was her, I would be constantly trying to figure out how to make the sample testing go just a bit faster without compromising the results, and I'd be trying to make use of the beetles for scientific purposes (trying to get them to eat spare samples just to see how what their reactions to them is) as well as logistical purposes too in the lab.

She's like an actually scientific Agent Mulder... so, more like Agent Scully then. I do like the story, and the pic is pretty sweet... but I gotta say, given what we already know about the prevalence of organic molecules in space... there's gotta be something out there! I vote Dr. Kaminsky should receive a promotion... but just like a new title, no actual pay increase or any real authority. This is a government post after all!

Oh yeah. It's all about the science with her, no personal beliefs interfering with the results, just personal beliefs motivating the work. Organic molecules being ubiquitous certainly gives Kaminsky a hell of a lot of work to do, but I took an exceedingly pessimistic approach in Retrograde when it comes to the abundance of life in the universe and society accepting evidence of its existence, past or present. Lots of million or billion year old clues but nothing to convince the naysayers beyond a doubt yet. Of course another very important factor to take into account is that at this point, in the mid-2580's, we've only explored an incomplete sphere of space a shade over 100 light years across. Even in this setting we're barely scratching the surface.
As for Kaminsky, definitely should get a promotion to make up for all the ribbing she takes!

I like her! She sounds like a fun, cheap date... and by 'fun' I mean "likely to talk about science all night" which is honestly one of my favorite things. Also, by 'cheap' I mean "will let you into the lab if you have a bag of take-out and half a bottle of good booze"
With a sample size of 1/1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000th of the total volume of the known universe, you can't really expect to hit the 'jackpot' the first few million times you sample something.
I'd rib her... by which I mean I'd get totally drunk on my 1/4 of the good booze I bribed my way into the lab with and trip over the discarded take-out boxes and bruise her ribs with my forehead on my way to the cold hard tile floor.

Honestly sounds like a typical 'date' for Erin.
She's one of the poor straight girls in Khal941 's setting. She tried to make a move on the maintenance tech but he was gay...

Sounds like Erin and I have the same luck(?) with dates! That poor girl... 1 in 20 humans are men... and she manages to find a gay man
...the real question is, how does he find another gay man? At 5% to 10% of the male population (assuming it's similar to today), he's going to be looking for 1 in 400 or 1 in 800... poor guy!

As I mentioned to Daemoria, the Cray Z-MP is beautiful. And I think I am in love with Dr. E. Kaminsky.

Thank you! I've been wanting to guest star a Cray for years. Finally got the chance with this piece! And we'll definitely be seeing more of Kaminsky in the near future.

Great work! Beautiful colours and cel shading.
If only Dr. Kaminsky had some Shik prisoners to keep her company.

Nicely done backstory. I wonder if she's a gamer. Having a computer that powerful sitting there, mostly a unused is a big temptation.

I hadn't considered it, this setting is pretty retro so we don't see much in the way of video games, but I bet she plays a mean pinball!
That said, with a computer like that, she might be able to run Crysis on medium settings!

I'm thinking the original Homeworld at max settings and multiplayer. Crysis, on anything more on minimum settings, will cause any computer to catch fire and turn into a gooey molten mess. And in the case of your retro computer, it'll just generate a black hole and eat the planet...

Another Erin? I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later.
Beetles and a Cray? What more could a girl ask for?

Yeah, though this one's far less physical than Ms. Milanna!

A fellow (brunette) Erin even! I think this would please Ms. Milanna. God only knows what the good Doctor would make of her SoCal namesake.
Beetlebro!
