Description "They were the ones terraforming this place?"
"Yeah, their tech.  Kasperov. Rumor has it they're aliens.  Pretty sure they're just Russkies."
"Doesn't smell like Soviet atmosphere processors."
"Beats the smell of an EV suit."
"Maybe now that we're here Captain Turner can tell us more about this rock."
"Hope so."

American troops operating under NATO command survey their new assignment, the largest moon of 23 Librae b, also known as Kasparov 16L.

Awesome looking female soldiers. I love how they're having a conversation about Kasparov CIA

"Those Kasperov Russkies got Thompson already, and took her jacket and tags."
*locks and loads* "Now that's inexecusable.  Not enough to send back to her family.  Can't have that."
"Lets go talk to the Cap and ask who's going after Thompson's jacket."

Hehehe, good picture!  Wonder what's in the cigarettes?

I like this a lot. It lends to the imagination all kinds of posibilities, as well as being good art.

In this timeline, did DeGaulle relent? Because France left NATO in our timeline, kind of, sort of...and here are the Americans anyway, with Colonel Cote (who I am assuming is French)

I like what appear to be classic M-16s!

I wasn't questioning anything! (trembles in fear) It all seemed fine to me!  The M16's seemed entirely appropriate! I has been reading a biography of DeGaulle and was feeling slightly Gaullist* but wasn't pointing out anything as being an error, saints of eternal night  and the Gods below forbid!

*Mainly because of reading about the Petit-Clamart assassination attempt. 22 August 1962! The Organisation armée secrète vs DeGaulle and his mighty Citroën DS! (DeGaulle wins)

The mighty DS! I can definitely see Colonel Cote in one of these, although the time period's off, and it seems unlikely they'd haul around her personal DS on a transport. No...

i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/i…

But no criticism intended! Why, why, O Daemoria? ( I get in my Citroën DS, pop DJ Squarepusher's COME ON MY SELECTOR into the tape deck and drive off rapidly, pursued by tentacles and NATO)

(Luckily, anticipating the involvement of Daemoria, I have taken the precaution of borrowing Fantomas' flying Citroën DS www.youtube.com/watch?v=roxqTO… )

Hahaha, comment chains like this are what make this site worth using.  I was actually unaware of France's position with regards to NATO, adds an interesting element to Cote's joint unit.

A DS like that would be perfectly at home on Mu Virginis.  Cote's city of residence there is tailor made to look like a Belle Epoque vision of Paris.  Lots of wrought iron and stonework.  That car's as iconically French as the Eiffel Tower.

(And don't worry, if you were!  I enjoy comments that highlight parts of my research that I missed!)

The timeline as we know it is mostly intact up until around the 1970's though it's not a 1:1 match.  In the years between 2300 and 2600 several events of the 20'th century are echoed, so France's partial withdrawal from NATO would have happened around 2499,  this takes place in 2586, so France's relationship with NATO would be in line with the early to mid 90's.  Not quite full membership but still allied.

Cote's unit is not strictly French, but French-speaking.  She herself is French, but her team is hand-picked from all over, and some of them are not from NATO member states.  It's sort of a mixed special forces unit under NATO's Joint Operations Command.  They're meant to come in and disrupt the enemy long enough for the regular army to arrive.  Far too small to hold a moon on their own.  Cote's unit at this point has moved on to 54 Hydrae to continue being the tip of the spear, meanwhile the American Colonel Amanda Burns has taken command of a much larger force made up primarily of American troops at 23 Librae.

Both Cote and Burns take orders from CENTCOM on Mars, with each being selected because of their proximity to the system, with Cote being based in the Mu Virginis system and Burns slightly further from 23 Librae at HD 125276 d (Salacia).

Ah yes, the A2's!  Since I'm doing the whole "20'th century analogue" thing, everybody gets period weapons and to an extent, period gear (see Lace 609's XM16E1 and ALICE mag pouches).  That's sort of a cheat of mine to give a visual sense of the era.  Civilian fashions also follow the timeline, looking forward to showing that!

Surprised they are not wearing desert camo instead of plain khaki.  And the trooper on the right has the right idea of keeping her hair buzzed short.  Don't know what kind of beasties they'll pick up here.

I had entertained the idea of them sporting chocolate chip camo in these environments but aside from seeming too modern, the pattern really messed with the readability of the forms.  Of course I suppose readability is the exact opposite of what one realistically wants, but in drawings it makes things a bit screwy.  And yes!  Buzz is the safest bet, even though so far there's been no evidence of life on other planets.  No reason to give those little buggers a chance, besides, bald is beautiful, as they say!

Would like to see this choco-chip pattern.  And buzzing one's hair does leave any critters from setting up shop on your home turf.  And for some women, the buzzed look is also a great fashion statement.
