Description Valentina "Val" Danilova (kneeling) and Gavrila "Gav" Myshkina (standing) lighting off a few rounds at the range. This is not on Earth.

Just wait till one of those casings drops down Gav's shirt. Hot brass and titty cleavage don't get along.

Gav's Tokarev is a bit of an anachronism, but then Val's AK might be as well, considering the setting.

Does Val's AK have a grenade launcher under the barrel?

I like to think that the "burn" is the fact that Gav is consistently shooting tighter groupings than Val is...

Beautifully done, so hot and clear, a very nice image.

If the venerable Tokarev is still in use, can one perhaps hope for an example of the good old Nagant gas-seal 7.62 revolver to show up in the hands of your space Soviets?

They've appeared in sketches from this setting before, but I've not put one in a proper, finished picture yet.

fun fact; check out the Soviet space film PLANET OF STORMS; at one point a cosmonaut is obliged to defend himself against some Venusian lizard-people with the aid of his trustyΒ ΠŸΠΈΡΡ‚ΠΎΠ»Π΅Ρ‚ ΠœΠ°ΠΊΠ°Ρ€ΠΎΠ²Π°,Β PistoletΒ Makarova.

Colonel Cote seems like the kind of person who'd carry the precision Sig P210; I can't imagine her hauling out a St. Etienne Model 1892 revolver, elegant as it is.

I'll have to check it out.Β  So far the only Soviet sci-fi film I've seen is Solaris (Dig the nickel plated Steyr-Hahn!), been meaning to watch The Sky Calls.Β  I'll add Planet of Storms to the list.

This picture was drawn before I came up with the rules for the setting, one of which was a time scale based on the 20'th century.Β  I came up with that mainly for the benefit of the audience, to provide a sense of the passage of time.Β  This would be some time in the mid-2570's so the equivalent year would be about 1991 (In this version the Soviet Union doesn't collapse but that's another can of worms entirely), so if I redrew this today that Kobra sight would have to go!Β  Also go ahead and morph the AKS-74M back into an AKS-74.

Col. Cote's sidearm is a Manurhin PPK.Β  Sketched her putting it to use a couple of times but again it's never been in a finished pic.Β  Of course wheelguns are represented by her second-in-command, Captain Golana, who carries a Manurhin MR-73.Β  There's also an AFSOC operative who packs a Dan Wesson SuperMag but she is quite completely insane.

Anyway, good to see some love for the hardware!Β  I do try to make the weapons and their use accurate and appropriate for the setting.

If where being realistic here, gunpowder firearms will never go away completely, plenty of Sci-Fi settings have energy weapon tech that manages to either be somehow more efficient, or more powerful than conventional slug throwers; but in real life, infantry portable energy weapons will always be fighting an uphill battle against conventional firearms, since a bullet to the brain pan will kill you just as dead as a laser bolt, plasma bolt, etc, etc.

Firearms will always be cheaper, easier to acquire/build, and just as deadly; also, such ubiquitous and durable designs as the AK family, will probably have descendants still using the same basic mechanism, long after the very name of Kalashnikov has faded from memory.

That's what I figured.Β  For the purpose of this setting it's mostly a cost-driven move to keep them around.Β  Of course there's the added benefit of chemical firearms not requiring a power source and not being affected by most environments.Β  In a pinch they can even be fired in space, of course heat becomes a problem quickly, but they'll work.

It's all about energy-density VS stability over time. The chemical reactions in any modern 'powder' are wonderfully efficient at very quickly converting a small volume of solid matter into a huge volume of expanding gas with very little energy input. You can keep them on a shelf for decades and they still perform well, while also being fairly safe to handle and store.

There's simply no known system that can beat the utility of modern ammo without greatly increasing energy requirements (and mass), decreasing storage life (and safety), or requiring materials science beyond our current horizons.

On the other hand... once we have materials that can reliably deal with detonation rather than deflagration... boy howdy! That'll be a fun day to be alive. Imagine bullets propelled by small, compact, and safe high-explosive charges instead of the current low-explosives we use today. Ultra-high-velocity case-less sabot rounds that weigh only fractionally more than theΒ  penetrator tself... say goodbye to body armor!

A clear sign the fighting is getting really bad when you're using old weapons.

Then again, M16s were in use by NATO during this period of time, so I've been told.

You're crazy man. Hot brass and cleavage go great together!

Fantastic pic, the girls look great and the details are crazy good.

Nice to see a full-color version of Gav too. She's a real beauty.

What do they use for range targets on Callisto?

Callisto. The moon in the background is Ganymede, though it's pretty much impossible to tell.

Interesting, the first thing I noticed is that both had a sunburn, then I noticed the title. lol

Everything looks so clean, even the weapons look amazingly detailed, great work.

Weird when that happens, huh?

Exhaustive weapons research does have its benefits, haha. Thanks!
