Description 110930-A-VB845-111

An Afghan boy looks at the camera as he sits in front of his home in the Ganjitsu Kalay, Kandahar Province,
Afghanistan, Sep. 30, 2011. The boy is unable to use the right side of his body due to an illness he had
when he was a baby. (U.S. Army photo by Spc. Kristina Truluck/Released)

This is a picture of the little boy from Conversations .
Unfortunately, because he lives in a very secluded farmer's territory, he won't be living a successful or happy life.

Thank You, thank you for such beauty and life within this photograph.
The child's eye reach my soul with a yearning and a peace, yet suffering than any other eyes of children I have seen here.
This is such an important aspect of photography, where we are able to see the other side of our daily expectations, poverty and tragedy.
To witness this, all I can say is that you have a vocation to capture images we would probably never see, continue doing so, for the sake of these individuals story. They need to be told and see, but most importantly prayed for.

Thank you so much for the critique!

You're right about the need of having this story told.  I almost didn't take this picture because I flt like I was violating his and his family's privacy.  But they didn't mind it.

Wow just the look in the boys eyes and look on his face are so many words. He looks like he feel just drained of any understanding (like little kids are sposse to be) His jewelry is bright and look like his mother made them for him, which is a nice thought. But the thought that he is like this forever crippled, is just really upsetting and sets up the mood really well... You did a very good job at captureing him and what he feels as a child living in Afghanistan.
Outstanding work on this picture of this little man!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out a critique for me. I felt so horrible for this boy, he most likely won't have a good life out there as he grows up since the tribe out there consists manly of farmers. =c

I think your pictures are amazing, full of very strong emotions.
I added this picture to my favorites because it reminds me that in the future, I want to try and bring something good to others, and receive from them as well.

I respectfully disagree with your statement that he won't live a happy life, many people all over the world live everyday with serious disabilities and it doesn't stop them, he may well be incredibly successful and happy, who are we to know?
His life will be harder, yes, but not unhappy, happiness does not depend on physical abilities, socio-economics or location.

Other than that this is a great shot.

Please don't be offended, my comments are not meant that way.

No worries, I'm not offended at all!

You're absolutely right about other people; my statement was just an observation from what I've seen all around that area - even perfectly fine people are struggling to keep their families clothed and fed. It's a harsh and unforgiving environment over there. I really do hope he does find a way to thrive, he and his family were so kind to us.

I can understand that, living in a desert, nothing comes easily.
It's amazing the generosity that those with so little show, don't you think?

Beautifully composed, good focus. At first glance, the POV seems slightly high, but I think it actually enhances the mood of the shot, giving the viewer the sense that the kid is vulnerable - good work!
