Ponies!Fort Meade, MD

Canon 5D MkII
I was stoked when I saw the trailers...and so was the ninjababy. Unfortunately, the MPs wouldn't let any of us across the road, so we had to satisfy ourselves with watching these beauties from afar. I hadn't heard that much whining bout wanting to see the horses since I was that little.

Bud Clydes!! My babies! I love these big guys so much. My family on my Mom's side were major shareholders way back when, and we loved to go to the stables. These guys are as gentle as lambs. 18 hh, one-ton lambs. :-D

Ha, yes!Β We used to visit them at the Busch Gardens in FL every year.Β
Drafties are one of the best.Β

Aren't they ever? :-D I wish my Dad didn't have a fear of horses (he got trampled as a kid) because I always wanted to have them when I was growing up. Now budget and housing keeps me from having one, but I'm surrounded by ranch land (yay Texas!) and horses are as valued as vehicles here. So we're not hurting for equines to admire. Mostly quarter horses and the odd thoroughbred or Arabian, but drafties find plenty of love here too. There used to be a ranch on the outskirts of Austin that took in and rehabbed abused draft horses and there were some fine Clydes there as well as Shires and Perchies. I cried when it was closed down and the horses were trucked elsewhere. I hope they found good homes!

Yeah it does, especially when my Mom had always been a horse woman and even trained jumpers and did dressage when she was young. She was the one that really instilled in me a love of equines, but because of my Dad it never went beyond "admire from a distance". I'd love it if I could afford riding classes for my daughter (and yeah, myself too hee hee) but with a mortgage and debts to pay off, three kids to take care of, and only one income to do that with...that is a dream that'll have to wait unless something really radical happened. Oh well, at least we can pull over and click at them from the side of the road, though. Sometimes they come over and investigate and many of them are eager for a throatlatch rub or a scratch behind the ears. I especially love the "muzzle in the shoulder, breathing hay-breath all over your chest" thing they do... :-D
And you're always welcome here in Texas! We love having visitors and you'll have plenty of good food and conversation, and the sights out here are fabulous! One thing that's a guarantee, too, is that since you're military you'll get a heck of a hero's reception virtually anywhere you go. This area of Texas is especially kind to those who have served. And Western culture...? And how! This is the pulsating saddle-leather-scented heart of Western culture, right here. You know you've hit it when a metropolis like Houston or Dallas holds rodeos on the middle of the city, and company CEO's may sport saddle calluses on their sittin' parts. Β :-D So if you ever plan a vacay, give us a shout. We'll make sure you and your family get a tour of the Hill Country and Granite Country.

Oh man, that sucks. I've been apprehensive about cantering for years after seeing a percheron cross spook and flip over my dad.
Can you adopt me? Lol. There's not much western culture in the part of Maryland where I live. I've been the dork riding English in jeans and cowboy boots.

I was whining right there with you every time a horse came into view. I remember trying out a pony, breaking my collarbone and since we were Navy my father wanted to go to the Naval hospital - a 45 minute drive. I was in sooooooo much pain, but every time a horse came into view that pain was forgotten and the horse was pointed out. Hasn't changed in many many years either. Brace yourself, there will more to come I am sure. Beautiful Pic. Are you in MD? I was a Navy brat but being the youngest I got to spend most of my life in Southern Maryland near Pax River Naval Air Station where my father retired after 20 some years.

Hahaha, I still do that!Β My husband gives us hell every time we do it.Β I can't wait until he's five and I can start taking him to lessons.
Yup!Β Been here since 2009 and seems like I'll always be stuck here, haha.Β

Me neither, fireworks still freak me out.Β Yet I'll easilly fall asleep next to a helicopter pad or some shoes in the dryer. xD

I hate to say it, but it was pretty terrible. And not for the usual, materialistic reasons a teenager would call something terrible.
Mind if I save time and just post links to Journals to fill you in?
