Serving as the Technocracy's mainline standard-issue assault rifle, the M40 utilizes the same hybrid coilgun technology as the HC 18 in a rifle-sized package. Made as a compromise after a project for military-wide issuing of plasma weapons was deemed unfeasible at the time, the M40 shares many benefits of both systems while still being familiar to operate. With standard-issue 40 round magazines, ergonomic controls, tight groupings, tame recoil and solid in-field reliability, the rifle is favored among almost every branch of the Lyceenian military. Combined with it's semi-modular design, the weapon has proven itself as a versatile and effective platform.

Owing to it's exceptional muzzle velocity and plasma-sheathed projectiles, the M40 is rather effective at penetrating armor plate. This comes at the cost of overpenetration against softer targets however, and early users of the rifle found themselves needing to carry multiple types of ammunition at once. While a redesigned standard-issue projectile was made to help alleviate the problem, some, more specialized military branches have yet to fully adopt it.
