Description Overview

The IRS's reserve forces are particularly mandated for defensive combat, taking part in COIN operations against rebel and terrorist groups or serving as additional forces to muster against enemy invasions. Depending on their local homeworld's resources and allocation of funds towards the reserve formations, they can range from being as well equipped and trained as any other regular forces to being poorly equipped with older surplus equipment and staffed with eager but ill-trained volunteers. Regardless, the innate ability of the reserve forces to navigate and manuvere through familiar local terrain can be a boon to ambush and harass enemy invasion forces.

a) Planetary Militia

The Militia is one of the first military forces formed by the people, to the protect the people, against a variety of threats ranging from hostile wildlife to pirates and insurgents. As colonies progressively advance so too do the militia forces with better and newer equipment. Regular forces would eventually replace them as the first line of conventional defence but the militias would see continual use as domestic security forces providing local police and counterterrorist forces the firepower needed to subdue well-armed terrorists and insurgencies. Unlike regular troops, militia infantry eschew the SIBAS armor for lighter Load-Bearing Vests (LBVs) which can be inserted with ballistic ceramic plates for protection against bullets essentially giving up some measure of body armor for greater mobility. Weapons and equipment tend to be a mix of the new and the old depending on how developed the planet is - wealthier worlds would see militiamen armed with up-to-date S35 and S36 assault rifles, mid-tier worlds have them armed with modernised variants of the LMR-5 and poorer ones have to stick with old stamped steel and wood-stock LMRs handed down from the first days of the militia.

b) Last Hand ERF

Established after the Markenn War, the 'Last Hand' was to provide commanders an army of clones bred in secretive underground facilities using Artificial Human technology in times of dire military emergencies when all regular and paramilitary forces have been exhausted. This was to buy time for the defence of the world in question and hopefully spare the civilians from conscription. While poorly equipped with surplus rifles and flak jackets to reduce costs, the clone troops make up for it with unmatched skill in guerilla and urban warfare as they traverse complex subterranean tunnels, sewers and subways to ambush enemy forces. From birth until their activation for war, the clone soldiers are put in continous deep sleep and undergo countless training and exercises in virtual reality, which is also customised to reflect various key areas on the surface above them in preparation for the defensive war they were bred to fight in. The longer they are left dormant, the more inherently skilled they are in combat making it possible for certain Last Hand armies to evolve into a commando force instead of the cannon fodder they were originally purposed as. If it warrants the additional cost, military commanders can upgrade their starting equipment with some of the most important worlds even giving them more advanced weapons than their own regular forces. Regardless of their gear, it is an unwritten rule that all Last Hand clone troops must conceal their identities from the public hence the full face balcavas and multispectra goggles.
