Organisation of RANGSI Planetary Assault Forces
Overview
The strength of the RANGI's ground armies primarily lie in sheer numbers to make up for their lack of technological sophistication and advanced units. Tactics often revolve around pummeling the enemy with artillery and air support and then overwhelming them with swarms of mechanised infantry and armor. In what is aptly known as the 'Juggernaut' or 'shock-in-detail', the bulk of the RANGSI's forces are ideally concentrated on the least defended front with support and specialised units attacking the flanks or identified weak points in the enemy's formations. By swarming the enemy's front, it is theorised that the enemy is forced to divert units to keep the front defended, leaving other positions such as the flanks more vulnerable to attack. Once these flanking units have breached the enemy's weaker points, they are free to attack the enemy's frontal positions from the rear, assisting and regrouping with the main forces in a pincer move.
In order to facilitate the RANGSI's large armies, their equivalent unit sizes are often multiple times larger than what is conventionally accepted by other galactic militaries. For example, a RANGSI company has approximately 500 men which is 5 times the size of a typical company of 100 men.
The regiment is the basic unit of a planetary invasion. With 100,000 troops approximate, each regiment is often tasked to a continent. Hence, each planet is allocated ten regiments on average though this may be reduced or increased depending on mission requirements.
Combined Arms Regiment (CAR)
The Regiment is the basic unit capable of independent operations in a continent-sized theatre. Possessing 100,000 troops along with its own complement of armor, artillery, gunship support, logistics and other specialised units, it is designed to conduct combined arms operations.
A standard Regiment consists of 20 Battalions which is further separated into 10 Combined Arms Battalions, 4 Armored Battalions, 2 Shock Battalions, 1 Strategic Artillery Battalion, 1 Airborne Battalion and 2 Security Battalions.
The Battalion
The Battalion is the smallest and most basic unit capable of independent operations, especially combined arms. It typically has 5000 troops. By default, a standard Battalion is a combined arms battalion offering a versatile and flexible organic mix of infantry, armor and artillery supported by their own logistics and engineering attachments to use as rapid assault forces against enemy forces. To support the Regiment's operations on a larger scale however, Battalions can specialise by customising the compositions of their own constituent Companies. For example, an Armored Battalion would reduce its mechanised infantry companies and in their place, deploy more tank companies to provide more of an armored punch.
Types of Battalions
Combined Arms Battalion (CAB)
With a mix of mechanised infantry, tanks, artillery and other forms of specialised support, the Combined Arms Battalion is a versatile unit capable of using its diverse assets to carve its way through almost any obstacle with rapid speed. However, as the jack-of-all trades but master-of-none, this means when it comes to facing similarly-sized or even larger homogenous formations, the Combined Arms Battalion is at a disadvantage, unable to muster enough a specific type of firepower to defeat the specific type of enemy unit on its own, forcing it to halt and call upon either more Combined Arms Battalions, other Battalions who are more equipped for the task or external fire support.
Armored Battalion (ARB)
The ARB specialises in tank warfare, opting to sacrifice more of its infantry for more tanks, in order to effectively engage large enemy armored formations or create powerful spearheads in enemy points of weaknesses. The ARB is also more likely to field more heavy and even super heavy tanks. However, by reducing its infantry complement, the ARB becomes more vulnerable to anti-tank infantry, is more or less unable to effectively capture and hold territory and unable to operate in difficult terrain.
Shock Battalion (SHB)
Shock Battalions are a catch-all term for elite forces tasked for rapid high-intensity assaults and fully exploiting weaknesses in an enemy's defences. With rapid hover infantry and armor as their main backbone supported by special forces elements, Shock Battalions are adept at storming enemy positions and taking them by surprise.
Airborne Battalion (ABB)
ABBs are airmobile versions of CABs, bringing a wide variety of infantry, armor, artillery and other units via dropships. They are capable of deploying and relocating their forces at a moment's notice, making them perfect for fast assaults and acting as quick reaction forces to counter any enemy forces that have broken through the IRS's lines. However, even with ample gunship escorts, the overall ground firepower an ABB possesses is inherently less than a standard CAB due to the fact that they have to optimise weight, thus their only form of land-based fire support can only come in the form of light tanks, minimally-armored APCs and armored cars.
Strategic Artillery Battalion (SAB)
SABs are dedicated to maintaining and operating large artillery assets that are otherwise too slow or cumbersome to be attached to frontline units, these include ICBM launchers, THAADs, anti-orbital vehicles and anti-ballistic systems. They only maintain a skeleton complement of infantry and tanks for self-defence, the rest of their operational space is taken up by logistical, engineering and sensory units which support the actual strategic artillery units themselves providing ammunition, repairs and target acquisition. SABs are tasked to destroy large concentrations of enemy forces, heavily fortified military bases and defend the Regiment from the enemy's own strategic weapons be it in low orbit, in the air or on the planet surface.
Internal Security Battalion (ISB)
ISBs are primarily tasked for pacifying domestic resistance in captured cities and as such, are equipped for dealing with riots, insurgencies and urban warfare. ISB Infantry are equipped with a vast array of non-lethal equipment ranging from riot shields to stun batons and tear gas guns, as well as lethal weapons tailored for CQC such as shotguns, SMGs and carbines. There would be significantly less numbers of tanks, in their place APCs and IFVs modified for urban combat are deployed as fire support. ISBs also have more detachments of gunships and dropships in order to control a captured city's airspace and allow for airborne recon, air assaults and close air support missions.
