Description
Get permission before using any creative work that is not your own. Crediting or disclaiming IS NOT permission.
What's this About?
You don't feel bad using someone else's pretty photo or kawaii anime artwork for your graphic design? Because it's copying, not stealing? Right? But you're not just making a copy of the file! You're leeching off someone else's talent without them knowing!
Artists have the same intellectual property rights online as they do in real life. And just because it's easy to get away with it on the internet, doesn't mean it's ok to do!
IT FEELS GOOD to know people want to use your artwork for a web/graphic design. But it's annoying to have it done without your awareness.
Ask permission! Communicate! Make an artist happy knowing you like their work! Make yourself happy knowing the artist is ok with you've done with their work!
MISCONCEPTIONS
Getting Permission is Not Difficult
If you can take an hour to create a wallpaper or something, surely you can spend 5 minutes sending an email or letter asking permission.
Thank You All!

Scared to ask, and I'm not a copyright supporter because people don't realize is that people might have the same idea, that why you shouldn't copyight. Β
Sorry if I offended you with bold letters but it's a serious problem.

If I REALLY want to do my own version of a picture, I ask.
I recently did a redraw of one of my sister's pictures because I told her I could draw it better than she did. It was a challenge. To even it out, my sister agreed to (eventually) redraw a a deviation of mine she chooses.

It was something that used to enrage me, but sometimes I have to give people the benefit of the doubt. No, often someone doesn't mean to be hurtful by saying, "copyright someone not me".
I don't understand how people can miss the fact that the kawaii picture they found on Google was made by an artist who put years of skill and effort into the piece. I don't understand it, but it happens anyway. It's really no use to yell at these people and call them names because they don't know any better. However, if it's laziness, then that's absolutely no excuse.
The point is, I would feel gutted if I displayed some of my own beautiful artwork on the internet, and it was given the caption, "image copyright to Google".

Well I guess it was mainly Japanese companies it is being done with so they don't usually worry...that latest one even ripped off Disney (no credit given for wreck it ralph) though lol the thieves are doomed I hope...
Even if the company doesn't care stuff like this makes me not want to do it at all...Guess I'll be a big unpopular but meh better that and a real artist than a sorta sell out and encouraging this sort of thing because that will make big companies try to bring up things similar to SOPA again..Don't get why these guys don't realize this. =/

Asian countries are fairly loose about intellectual property rights. That's how artists can get away with selling doujinshi (fan comics) for profit. It's not that they don't care, it's just that the policy seems alien to them. At least they use their own original artwork and acknowledge the original authors.
What annoys me is people who sell t-shirts/buttons/etc on ebay or wherever using someone else's art. It's just that they've put no effort at all into the creative work. They just find an image on Google and *bam* profit! "Thank you Google!" They say.
Also, I'm fine with someone tracing/copying/etc as a learning tool. It's when they wave it around saying, "Look what I made!" (as if it's a completely new thing) and not acknowledging the original creator, that's crossing a line. It's not really breaking a law, but it's treating the original creator as if they don't exist.

Ok...Thanks for letting me know what it means. Yeah I can see saying look at my original masterpiece when it was yours if you found it being so annoying especially when others assume it was theirs. Had that problem in spore long ago >< at least they didn't make money though. I don't like fan art sales because it confuses new people and seems to attract other sorts of art thieves in places besides here *glares at blatant facebook game* lol maybe I'll play it to figure out how that is happening. -.- Disney even on there geez. I think the credit must be in game somewhere or they would have already been taken down.
If I find these other things ever happening I will unwatch too.

Spore is a bit of a haven for copy-cats. I don't know if it's possible to fully own something you create on Spore.

The selling trademarked and copyrighted content part is what I really disagree with frankly I'd be worried about being taken to court myself for selling or buying this stuff but I've seen people do this here that are even popular o.o; Ugh that bothers me but eh it's their life and their risk to take but don't think it's a good idea....Even a game company did this lately with big companies and small artists grrr.

Thanks for this. I just wouldn't feel morally right taking someone's picture and tracing and coloring over it and then posting it like my own saying this is so and so's but hope it's ok...Even a big company so I hope people don't ask to buy fanart type stuff from me...Unless the artists give permission somehow like in the reference section and even then I usually just practiced without posting because I like to get a feel for how to draw something then try my own take on it from another angle or something to see if I've gotten better...Think that's a better way to do things and it just looks better but can see how this is very good practice when beginning art or trying something you don't draw at all normally to draw from photos...But I don't really consider the result to be art more like practice/getting a feel for it if that makes sense. I'm going to use this on my Id.
