Dex will tell you like it is even when you don't ask for it... actually, especially when you don't ask for it. He doesn't do it to be rude, though it usually comes off that way, he's just an outspoken feller who doesn't quite hear his lack of tact. Some may find his choice of words distasteful, but you'll never hear that from him. His ma and pa always said to tell the truth, so he sees nothing wrong with what comes out of his mouth.

Chummy
Not necessarily willing to make friends with everybody, but willing to make friendly. He sees no point in picking fights with the disagreeable types as it only throws a wrench in ranch rapport, and ultimately leads to more hard work. He's an easy going guy for good reason, though his mouth has been know to stir up trouble

Clever
Hard to say if he's smart or not, but Dex is definitely a problem solver. His years of experience also help him detangle daily hiccups in an efficient manner... they've also taught him the best ways to slack off, not that ol' Dex doesn't take his job seriously, but everyone needs a little rest and relaxation now and then...

Pre-Group History: Dex was born and raised as a ranch hand in Texas. As a young boy, he was the most troublesome pup in the pack, always picking fights, stealing, lying- he was a naughty little thing with a devilish smirk to match. As he got older, and more trainable, he found his passion in herding, and he was darn good at it. He found contentment in his new job and came to realize that he quite liked pleasing the ranchers. With this newfound entertainment, he decided to make an effort to change his obstinate ways and become a more upstanding resident of the ranch. years passed, and Dex continued faithfully doing his good work wrangling livestock.

Over in Canidale, one farmer was having difficulty with his growing population of cattle, and his dog was practically useless when it came to herding. He was always either too scared or to excited when it came to bovine, so the farmer went around asking if anyone would be expecting litters so he could raise his own cattle dog. Unfortunately, none of his fellow farmers had plans to breed their dogs, but he found something even better! He greatly admired the skill of one of his neighbor's dog and the man told him his sons still had most of his siblings down at their ranch in Texas. Being the tight-knit community that they were, the man contacted his son and told him about the farmer's predicament and basically commanded him to sell the man one his dogs-- but in a fatherly way...

A couple months later when the man's sons went to Canidale to visit their father, they brought with them a handful of dogs for the farmer to choose from. He watched the two men display each dogs capabilities, and the farmer was blown a way by their level of skill. He eagerly paid for the one he found most to his liking, Dex, and also gifted the men a few of his finest Holsteins in exchange for such a wonderful cattle dog.

Dex wasn't quite sure about his new living arrangements, but he was willing to make the best of it. Plus, seeing the joy he brought to the poor old farmer really made him happy.
