Description This was a #dtiyschallenge artwork inspired by Dylan Bonner .Β

Drawing mermaids is one of my few artistic pleasures, yet it's not something I'd openly boast about, especially in person.
For some reason I'm just not yet 100% comfortable about it. There's just some part of me that's trying to hold myself back, a blend of guilt and shame and doubt.
I can't explain why I haven't embraced this side of me that enjoys drawing beautiful mermaids, which in my head clashes with the other sort of stuff that I may be known for drawing, the "cool" stuff like military themes of soldiers, tanks, etc. That these two things are incompatible.
Maybe I'm just insecure about all of this, a lingering masculine reaction to avoid anything effeminate.
Sometimes I pretend that it's not an issue, but then I worry incessantly about how others may perceive my content here or on my other social media.
I hope some day I'll get over it, that I'd be okay with displaying stuff like this with my other artworks.Β

I've felt that same restrainment for most of my life.Β  I've always been a big fan of mermaids ever since the Little Mermaid movie.Β
Even when I didn't realize it until much later.

These days, I'm much more open about it. I don't think many people mind you being into mermaids. They're quite popular.Β
I'm a fan of your mermaids myself!

I do feel kinda guilty sometimes since my fascination and love for mermaids could almost be considered a fetish. Perhaps I'm not alone in this, and I'd like to be as nonchalant about displaying my artworks of mermaids alongside my other subjects.

Hopefully, my recent work-in-progress development of a story of mermaids and Navy SEALs can bridge that gap.

I think it is a fetish (I'll be honest, in my case, it is). Or, I don't know. Some people would obviously disagree.

Mermaids are a very weird concept, to begin with. But I wouldn't feel any guilt about liking them. And I'm sure there's no need to justify it.

I'm gonna ramble on a bit...

Mermaids do have that mysterious appeal. They're consistently depicted as irresistibly beautiful women with an alluring voice while having a fish lower half that can often befuddle the primal desire of men, either a turn-off or becoming even more enticing due to the mysterious and exciting possibilities this form could entail.

Having that fish lower half does grant mermaids dominion of the waters, something humans have long sought to control and possess as it holds both great bounties and danger. Yet their tails make them completely helpless on land, which I believe spills over to the BDSM practice and appeal.

Unlike vampires or werewolves or other fantasy creatures that can have a human form, mermaids often do not present a great danger in either form unless in their natural environment, which makes them nonthreatening and desirable to possess but can also be uninteresting beyond the sex appeal.

Overall, I wouldn't feel bad about Mermaids. They're fun.

Yeah, those mermaids in Peter Pan are quite cute and lovely.

Interestingly enough, the movie Peter Pan (and thus those mermaids) preceded The Little Mermaid animated feature film.

Thanks. That was tough to pull off, but I'm quite happy with how well it looks.

There isn't anything to be ashamed of! I openly bask in mermaids, myself, and I'm proud of it!

I shouldn't be, it's a far tamer interest compared to a lot of the freaky stuff out there.

But part of it may be just wanting to keep pushing myself to improve and take my art to a semi-professional side gig, or more.

Professional-grade mermaids... Now, that's an idea!

Just keep honing your skills, and be daring. ^^

You're better at it than I am; don't be hard on yourself.Β  Good work here.

Thanks, maybe I shouldn't be too harsh on myself, as I only hope others may appreciate my work as I do making them.

If my writing skills could be better I'd also be into writing stories around these and my other works.

I stick with what I know, outsourcing art and making stories.Β  Or you could always practice and get better, either way, don't sell yourself short.
