Vlad the Impaler, aptly nicknamed, was the only known ruler to use impalement on a wide scale.
Men, women, children... it didn't matter to him.
The most notable and imfamous instance was toward the end of the Turkish invasion of Wallachia. He had thousands of poeple, mostly captives from the war and wounded who would not make it impaled, lining the road to his capitol at Tirgoviste.
They called it, 'The Forest of the Impaled' and it was so horrible to see, the Sultan Mehmed II turned and left Wallachia immediatly after entering the capitol, he was so disgusted and shaken.
... Geez, my girlfriend is right, I am a walking encyclopedia.

Wallachia is the place just below Transylvania, where our beloved Vlad hails from.
