i usually take portrait with my lens aperture totally opened. (in this case, f2.8 since i used 24-70 f2.8)

I do like you. I usually do aperture opened. I like light photos and nice bokeh in background. I didn't do many sessions and I'm a totally beginer in this part of photogaphy, but my friends pleased me to do some sessions of them. I must do a nice photos

do you know "beauty dish"? using it with back lit condition works great for all female portrait.
and almost all people have great feature in their face from the side.
men look cool and strong, women look beautiful.
i usually start from that to explore.
because side view will not get any stress and tension that usually happening at the beginning of the session.

oh, one more thing....
when you find any portrait with models eye showing, you just look at the eye.
find where is brighter (white), that is where light is set up and beauty dish is set up.
in my case, take a look at models eye, you see white circle, that is my flash.
and you see less brighter white big rectangular at the bottom, that is beauty dish.
this is how you can learn lighting from other photographers.

in that case, get any rigid white foam or board.
i prefer bigger than 90cm x 90cm.
set it horizontal in your stomach to bast level.
take a photo.
this is how we kill unwanted shadows on the model's face.
and we call it "beauty dish".
also this will add beautiful eye catch in your eyes, so your photo looks more attractive.
or you can do the same with flash.
it is a bit difficult since you need to study exposure compensation and light modifier.
for more basic to details, you can simply google "portrait", there are tons of information about it.
