True.
At least a LESSER chance, there are numerous STDs that can be obtained with little to no contact - it also depends on the kind of "virgin" we're talking about here. Most of the general public tends to believe "virgin" merely applies to sexual intercourse rather than applying the term to oral sex or others as they should be. You can get all sorts of diseases from someone else's mouth, hands, feet, etc.

It was just a suggestion. I mean, excluding the practicalities and specifics of todays society, I think it's highly likely that the reason Reed wants Rory is because he's a virgin and virginity = pure. Doesn't matter if that's not true, it's fiction. lol Tis the definition of unreal.

Well, as it stands, with any fiction, unless stated otherwise, the perception of your readers is everything - and that means, if you give us no other society, we will use our own reality's society(and the authors will use theirs).
It is fiction - perhaps with some elements of fantasy purely for the contrast in apparel and, as a result, times, but because there is no enormous emphasis on society really being altered in any drastic way, I make the assumption as the reader that this society operates a lot like my own.
It's simply a matter of perception.

-sigh- Okay fine. In Africa they still rape virgins because they think their 'purity' will cure AIDS. Therefore virgins are considered pure. Back in the wild west cowboys did the same thing to cure STD's. This time-frame aligns more easily to that time then modern day American would. Therefore virgins were pure. Therefore a neat-freak like Reed would want something untouched and unsullied. I honestly don't know why you took my idea and analyzed it to the new world and back. It's like taking Brave New World and claiming that due to the social independence, the religious imprint on society and the global population crisis of today the dystopian society of Huxley's novel is an impossibility and therefore all of his theories are debunk and his novel is rubbish. I mean, really...

Really, all I'm mentioning is that in the end it is, to me, childish and backwards. I think it is an unfortunate way of viewing the world and other people, particularly if you know anything about medical science, viruses or bacteria.
Having never read the book, I've no comment.
To me the mindset that one reads anything with is the mindset of that time rather than the mindset of the time that it was written in or for. It can make any reading of anything inherently skewed due to our own subconscious beliefs and expectations for behavior. My expectation is that people are not treated as such and are not used as such because of the advancements of science and otherwise (or will not be used, etc). I am also perfectly aware that this is not the case and the nature of science and medicine can be, in turn, used on those with which the intent had been to help (social Darwinism, the invention of a sub-species of human in order to keep slavery on the upside many years ago, and the like).
I'm sorry if you took my analysis as an affront to your personal views. I personally find the deconstruction of characters to be enjoyable as in my mind, characters drive plot, not plot drives characters.
I apologize again, and I'll stop yammering.

You can analyze all you'd like, but honestly you turned a fan speculation into something ridiculous. I'm not trying to relay the views of society today on a web comic that I happened upon months ago. I just simply enjoy the pages when they come out and try to speculate where I can. Seriously, I was never trying to personally attack you or challenge your view of society, but I kinda felt as if you were affronting me over... um... not a lot.

I'm sorry you looked at it that way - I was merely trying to explain myself, not you or every other person who reads the comic, let alone affront you for a viewpoint you may or may not share with me.
My enjoyment comes from speculation, and yours comes from simply reading. That's fine. I usually do too, but I probably applied too much of my personal perspective in building characters when I initially commented.
