The Queen of blades in all her glory!Kerigan From Starcraft.
I loved this game sooo bad!
i would spend an eternity playing it, with cheats, without, i didn't care, i just wanted to play it every day after school.
so this was a submission for a competition over at
I spent at least 40 hours on this...me not being the painterly type, i really wanted to give it a try! so this is 100% photoshop boys n gurls...and that makes it was 40 hours to much.
i didn't even make the top 5, but at least i know that i'm going to have to start practicing 10 fold.
so not only did this game get me into computer games(this and "one must fall")
but it also pushed me to try something else that i really enjoyed doing!, and i hope you all like it to, cause it's kinda an "i'm sorry for always dishin out pencil crap"

Me too! Such a great game (Even if it did teach me the hard lesson about online gaming), it was the first strategy game I'd ever played.

I never played Starcraft before, but I saw a kid play it a few times. I really like this pic though. It just pops off the screen. The depth and detail are completely amazing too! Awesome job!

actually, i originally intended to draw the protoss, them being my favorite, and me not really being a zerg fan, but kerigan was so awesome, and she's the one that shined the brightest in the game, so i had to draw her.

I can tell that you're new to photoshop, but I can also see the time and effort that went into this.
I have questions about the color schemeβthought I'm not sure what they are yet. It's definitely a fresh take.
I can't omit props to your anatomy-not sure how you got that figure, but I love it. (some of the other entries have thumbs on the wrong side of the hands or impossibly enlongated or shorted parts of the body)
Overall it's actually 'sharper' than mine but then I was going for a "painterly" image so take that with a grain of salt.
I think you'll get it in, it's Pacific Time if you see their website, and if truth be told I have doubts as to whether they've got 75 entries so we all might get an extra week to touch up
Either way the most valuable thing for you here will probably be what you learned from this. Glad to see actual painting instead of photoshop filters and overlaying photos for texture.

actually, i know my photoshop inside out, i'v been using it for about 6 years now and i know it pretty much completely, but i love to work with my line arts. i'm more of a comic artist then a painting one, and filters are really not my stile...actually, i like doing it all without help from tips and tricks, i only use overlays when it comes to textures, and i make my own.
But after doing this, i mean, the last thing i drew on this was the infected human, so he came out nicer then the rest, it took me about an hour to do!, so i'v gotten quicker(which is gold for me cause i want to be a comic artist).
i tried making my pallet with purples and oranges, thats why everything is a little soft, but i find it made my drawing lack contrast in the end, and ith no time to spare, i just sent it in, i'd LOVE to do some touch ups on it though...
but what really buged me was that i wanted kerigan to be green, like on the cover to brood wars. But every other zerg is red or hard core purple, and all the protoss are blue!, so i tried making it as warm as possible anyay, with the exeption to kerigan so she could stand out a little.
And as for anatomy, i took a picture of a friend at work in the pose, then i did about 5 sketches of that same pose, then i worked on the final illustration. had i just drew her without practicing some thumbnails first, it might not have come out so well.
