Liam Sharp was and is one of the most sought after comic artists in the business. After bursting on the scene by drawing the bestselling Marvel UK title of all time, Death Head II, he was back in America illustrating top line comics like Superman, Batman and Spiderman as well as special projects for people like Stan Winston. For anyone unfamiliar with his amazing work, his galleries can be found on deviantART. I recently got lost for an entire day perusing a single file of his Conan illustrations.

As incredible as his artistic prowess is,there is so much more.
- Death's Head 2 was the biggest ever UK produced comic to be sold in the US 500,000 Copies.
- Gears of War the biggest print run of any comic in the year that it was published and also designed the character “Jace” and the “Barrick” in the game itself.
- The second issue of Liam's Hulk run is the biggest selling issue of the Hulk of all time.
- A gifted and skilled artist at a very young age, Liam was the first first recipient of the Gifted Child Society scholarship which was the first of its kind.
- Accepted to Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford but decided to pursue a career in comics as an apprentice to Don Lawrence who his still now the only comic book artist to be knighted.
- Liam worked on the designs for the robot and cityscapes of Lost In Space while also designing a good portion of the gorgonites from Small Soldiers. He also worked on the design for Batman Beyond the animated show.
- Liam also worked on the ill fated Superman Lives film with Tim Burton directing and Nicolas Cage as The Man of Steel. Liam crafted concept designs for the robot costume and other aspects.
- Co-created the popular villian “PJ Maybe” in the Judge Dredd comic books.
- Liam co-created Spawn: The Dark Ages for Todd McFarlane.
- Spiderman-Clone Saga Artist.
- George Lucas was browsing deviantART and found Liam's page and his incredible artwork. He then commisioned a piece of art for new Star Wars Art: Visions and also acquired the original which now hangs at his Skywalker Ranch.

Liam’s foray into the purely textual form, his novel, God Killers, was published in 2008, second editioned in 2009, and is still garnering critical acclaim as it is being discovered by the wider community of (non-comics-reading) sci-fi readership. Metawhal Alpha is yet another example of the very finest in new next level illustrated storytelling, the Motion Book.
Only veteran comics storyteller Liam Sharp would be able to pull off this horror tale that resonates equally of both Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, doing honor to the legacies of both.

The story is about a restaurant owner who one morning finds an immense dead something somehow occupying the fourth floor of his warehouse. As the tale progresses, the hideous gelatinous corpse disappears and reappears at intervals, and then begins evidencing signs of being eaten piece by piece by some other unknown creature. The protagonist’s unhappy neglected wife finds the truth on the web. The corpse is a dead Cthulhu-like god from the 17th dimension that has been chased down by a dimension-skipping shark-like monster called a “Metawhal.” The neglected wife's efforts to warn our hero about the danger he’s in are dismissed like everything else she contributes. In a feminist twist at the end, Kevin, having ignored his wife's pleas, is eaten by the returning Metawhal. The political jolt of the abused being witness to her oppressor’s megalomania-based demise is the sort of thing rarely encountered outside a Liam Sharp story. His tales may be filled with fantastical horror and gore but also with remarkable intellect and thoughtfulness.
How are artistic disputes settled with your co-creator of Captain Stone? A lot of spouses wouldn’t dare undertake such an imminently passion-infused project as story creation, fearing harm to their relationship. Are you guys miracles of ego-less cooperation or just naively walking into a bear trap?
Ha ha! It’s funny—we’ve been collaborating in so many ways for so long it never seemed like an issue! I met Christina at Marvel UK, where she worked in production. Chris has helped me in more ways than I can say, from reading all my text stories back to me—the whole of God Killers—to brain-storming concepts and working out basic plot points. She’s researched, edited and generally supported a ton of my solo projects, as well as generally organizing me – which I need! Working on Captain Stone is Missing… was actually a joy! We kept our roles very distinct. We plotted it together, created the concepts, then Chris did the research and I did the heads-down writing. We would then review it together, after which I went away a drew it!

What are your thoughts on the increasing ability of artists and even fans to collaborate on projects due to technological advances? Do you appreciate instant feedback and suggestions?
Everything is faster now, which means it’s easier to keep up your creative energy. The fact that writers, artists and editors can all be so connected instantly just makes for a more energetic exchange of ideas and certainly a more collaborative experience. Photoshop. Hands down. I would honestly have to say that your's is some of the best comic art I've ever seen. I've noticed increasingly that alot of comic artist have bulked their characters up to disproportionate sizes (heck, i do it half the time) - but you pulled it off perfectly, so that it's believable. That's a HUGE question! There's no one answer either. Some comics need action, others don't need any. Some stories are all about intrigue and guess work, others are romances, or horror stories, of science fiction, or fantasy... You can only really decide for yourself, and based on your reading experience of other great books... Sorry if that's not much help!

Ha ha! Well, having not seen the cartoons I can't compare them... but seriously? Watchmen was a DC comic, and it's amazing. Same for The Dark Knight Returns, and Electra Assassin from Marvel... There are AMAZING stories produced by both these companies.

so may I guess that in comics there are vilains wich actually both want and actually CAN rule the world(like the Father in fullmetal alchemist brotherhood) and not some wannabe-geniouses wich have enough money to make giant robots but not enough for nuclear bombs.
(the most of vilains in cartoons are not immortal so it would be impossible for them to rule us)

I love your artwork. I have a question about equipment. I am a retired teacher (71 year old geezer) who has done artwork as a hobby (and semi-pro) most of my life. Some of my oils have sold from a local gallery, but I love pen and ink. The caricatures (hiring out for parties) and illustrations for American Studies Press were all pen and ink.
Now that I've retired I would like to do more using graphic technology. Do you think working from a pad would be too confusing for eye/hand coordination, or do you prefer something like the Wacom Cintiq? Is Sketchpad a decent software?

Great to hear from you Joe! I happen to prefer splitting my work between traditional and digital. I do the drawing in pencil and/or ink, scan it, and finish the art in Photoshop generally - though I DO use a Wacom, and lately a Cintiq. They are amazing tools, and the more you use them the better you get. You're the same age near enough as my dad, and he's making huge leaps digitally in the last couple of years...

Thank you for your response. Since my original message I purchased a Turcom Tursion and Sketchbook Pro. The learning curve is way steeper than is the case with a pencil, but I find scanning original sketches (as you described) and finishing in Sketchbook a real convenience, especially if I remember to use layers.

Awesome artwork. Captain Stone looks very intriguing...and I liked what you said about muscle bound characters slugging it out without much emphasis on storyline lol. Limitations actually makes a character interesting...aside from my rambling, I have a question– What would you consider as the most important thing to do when trying to convey an uber awesome story? I am working on my storyboard for a webisode animation series, and for me at least, originality seems to be paramount.

Thanks for the kind words! I would say the most important ingredient is actually integrity. If you have that, and you believe in your story 100%, then you're in the right area. Write about things you know, even if they are transposed onto a fantasy/sci-fi setting, or are allegorical. An authentic voice will chime, authentic feelings will strike home and touch people. There's nothing truly original under the sun, so go for integrity!

Thank you for the kind words! To answer your question - I think anybody trying to ignore technology, and progress across digital platforms, is in big trouble! The Motion Books we're putting up on dA, and the books that are being built and will be built by dA creators, are a classic example of an evolving medium. These are exciting times, and we should embrace them!

Hey there! I actually create art in lots of mediums - pencil, black and white ink using pen or brush, watercolor, acrylic, oil paint, and also Photoshop. Different mediums for different subjects!

When I use digital to create art I tend to use Photoshop, but I scan real drawings in first 99.9% of the time...

I became interested in making comics at age 11. I was influence by the "Captain Underpants" story series and "Calvin and Hobbes" comics, after I read them I'm hooked. I started to brainstorm characters, objects and environment for the series. But, I'm a student in his senior year and had to focus on my school work. What should I do?
