“You are not my fucking father!” The words left her mouth with little thought followed by even less regret. She thought those few words every day, every moment of her life since that son of a bitch decided to marry her mother. From the shocked, pained look on his face she knew all too well the words had hit their mark.

    Yet that look wasn’t enough.

    She wanted him on his knees, begging for her to stop saying such cruel things. She wanted tears spilling from his dull eyes. She wanted him vulnerable so she could laugh in his face and maybe even drive him away from the house, her family, her life.

    “You’re right,” She paused, staring at him. “I’m not your father. I’ll never be your father but I am who your mother loves now. You know damn well she loves me too. And you know damn well that I’m trying! I’ve been trying so hard since I’ve married Carrie to get you to at least think I’m decent!”

    “You’re a pile of shit.”

    “And you’re selfish! Inconsiderate to how others feel! Carrie loves me and I love her back, so why can’t you be happy that your mother was able to move on and feel happy again! I’m sorry she’s not some depressed, jobless slob who won’t get over her husband’s death, and I’m even more sorry you are!” He slammed his clenched fist onto the counter. Jo, the girl, stared at him with her mouth agape and eyes brimmed with tears.

    She leaned close to him, grabbing him by the collar of his own shirt. A tad bit taller then him but still not as strong she looked down and growled.

    “I don’t care what you think of me,” Her voice was cold. “This family will never want you here.”

    She released his shirt, turned on her heels and walked out of the house, unblinking and emotionless.

    ~~~
    There were no stars tonight. There was no moon either, just a gigantic, blank, grey sky. At least, that’s all Ken saw from the window of the tiny, rotting tree house… When his eyes weren’t blinded by tears.
    “Fuck family.” He growled as he curled up against the damp, splintering wood. “Fuck school. Fuck life.”
    He hugged his knees to his chest as tears slowly slipped down his pale cheeks. He hadn’t a single person to talk to. Theo had been busy with schoolwork lately, not that he’d enjoy listening to Ken’s petty problems. Though he usually gave great advice, or a ridiculously long yet helpful lecture on his importance in the world. Still, he couldn’t bother his friend. It was… Unfair. After being helped by Theo so many times he could barely help him. Hell, he can’t even help himself.
    Yet thinking of the unavailability of his friend opened another locked door. The realization hit him hard and of course in his vulnerable, depressed state had brought more tears.
    He had no one but Theo who probably wouldn’t be there later on.
    He was all alone.
    Silence buzzed in his ear ceaselessly. Annoyed, he covered his ears with his hands as if it would help, releasing his legs from his tight embrace. Laying his legs out in front of him he blinked slowly.
    Alone.
    It sounded bitter. Unhappy. Depressing. Painful. He didn’t even want to say the word.  He ran a hand through his hair as his irritated eyes produced more tears. Cursing, he embraced the fact he was alone.
    He embraced it and cried.
    ~~~

    Jo was still calming down. Anger piled in her throat and each time she opened her mouth she yelled.

    She had stumbled into a small forested area near her neighborhood. Not much was there to see, especially since she couldn’t really see anything in general. There was no light source tonight, just grey clouds spread across the sky.

    Not that she cared.

    The pointless argument she had just had was etched in her mind. Each word spat at each other repeated in her head ceaselessly. All of it seemed so important at the time, like it had needed to be said but looking back on the scene it seemed stupid. So stupid. Feelings on both sides were hurt for no reason other than the fact that Jo couldn’t just move on.

    That she couldn’t just shut up.

    “Fuck him. I don’t need him in my life. Neither does she!” She yelled once more. Her replaced her blood, anger traveling to her hand as she punched a tree with a decent amount of strength. Upon contact with said tree her skin broke sending a stinging pain up her arm, focused on her knuckles. She cursed, bringing her arm to her chest and caressing it. Slightly bloody and splintered she released her arm and brought it back to her side.

    Stupid fucking tree.

    Stupid fucking… Me.

    Growling, she looked up to the sky to see if any light would peek through, possibly help guide her out but of course nothing happened. She cursed once more, words too crude for your sensitive ears.

    And in that moment she heard something unexpected. A quiet sound, barely audible.

    Someone was crying.

    Looking in the direction of the sound she saw a shorter tree topped with a small treehouse, wood damp and rotting. The ladder was still there though it was old and chipped. Most likely abandoned, it’d be the perfect place for someone to be alone and cry, maybe even do other things regrettable in the future.

    And of course, with major curiosity, Jo decided to check out who was crying. Slowly approaching the tree supporting the ‘house’ she grabbed the ladder, splinters digging into her flesh.

    Not even flinching, she climbed. And as expected the crying had begun to grow louder. Opening the bottom entrance to the house she climbed in silently. In front of her sat a boy, taller than her. He looked tired, depressed and his red, puffy eyes practically screamed he was and still is crying.

    She recognized his face immediately though. Kendall Rivera, someone who she has been watching lately. She’d see him occasionally in the hallway, barely even look at him sometimes. He usually hung out with that blonde boy, though forgetting the name she shook off the memory and stared at him.

    He noticed her soon enough, breathing shakily as he hid his tears and sobs. “The fuck do you w-want?”

    She stayed silent. Her eyes watched him as he glared at her. Tears brimmed his eyes as she started to walk closer to him.

    He was always alone, something she had noticed. Without the blonde boy he seemed lost. So alone. Almost seeming pained. She occasionally caught him looking at her and he caught her occasionally looking at him.

    Though sometimes their eye contact would last for longer than a couple seconds and that made Jo’s heartbeat quicken.

    Breaking her from her thought, Ken huffed as Jo found herself kneeling in front of him. She noticed his fists were clenched and tears were trying harder to fall. Would he hit her?

    What was she doing?

    “Just say what you want a-already or f-f-fuck off.” He spat, blinking quickly to hold the tears in. She slowly reached her hand forward.

    What am I doing?

    He didn’t move away or swat her hand. Instead he just stared at her, watching her with glossy eyes. His head was hanging, and the way he looked up to her seemed so sad.

    She disliked it.

    Her hand slowly pressed against the bottom of his chin, guiding his head up so he’d look her in the eye. Her lips twitched now barely a smile. Her eyes traveled to his lips and then back to his eyes.

    “I said fuck off!” Biting his lip, tears now spilled from his eyes. “So fuck off!”

    Before she could process what she was doing, she leaned forward. Closing her eyes, their lips softly made contact. The kiss was faint, her lips barely brushing against his.

    Wide-eyed he stared at her as she pulled away, her hand now resting on his damp cheek. Her eyes were glossy now too.

    She knew how he felt; Alone. Alone and pained and depressed. Yet he didn’t have to feel this way. She wouldn’t let him feel this way anymore.

    In a whisper she said things she’d never have to think twice about, never have to regret, never have to say they were pointless. Though the words were quiet, Ken heard them loud and clear as they etched into his mind.

    “You don’t have to be alone anymore…” Tears spilled down his cheeks quickly now, more pouring down. “I won’t let you be alone anymore.”

    He stayed silent for a moment. Had she really just…? And then…?

    He then burst into a crying mess.

    And instead of leaving him to cry like he expected, instead of just saying it was a joke and laughing in his tear-stained face, she hugged him tightly. This time, he did the same back. He clung to her and buried his face in the nape of her neck. He silently cried, breathing shakily as she hugged him even tighter. Tears welled up in her eyes as she blinked them back and smiled.

    I won’t have to be alone anymore. Their thoughts identical. She smiled, wider than she ever had before.

    It actually hurt her cheeks, to smile this wide. Tears peeked from her eyes, sliding carefully down her pale cheeks and dripping onto his neck. Looking past him, in the corner she saw a face. Then a body. Barely even there.

    Her father.

    Her actual father.

    The one that had died.

    He looked at her with a sad smile. An approving smile. A proud smile. She smiled even wider as she silently said ‘I’ve missed you...’

~~~
    Hours past before Ken had calmed down, hours past in which Jo still had a smile on her face. She had let him out of her tight embrace and he let her out of his.
    “Thanks…” His voice was a whisper, sore from crying. She shook her head.
    “No need to thank me…” She answered, whispering back. Silence overtook the night and talking loudly seemed wrong, even though no one would hear them.
    It took a couple minutes, but just as Jo was about to stand and head home before her mother worried herself to death, Ken grabbed her wrist and brought her close to him. Both stood, slightly bent over so they couldn’t bang their head on the ceiling.
    His hand slowly drifted to her hip and settled there as he pulled her closer. She froze, both of their breaths quickened.
    “Really, thanks…” He seemed to get closer and closer, his head slightly angled to the side. “It means everything…”
    Closer and closer his lips got and soon enough his lips met her own. Their breaths mingled for mere seconds before he pulled away. Smiling at her he let her go and she climbed down the ladder with him following.
    He really wasn’t alone anymore.
