I'm sorry for the late update!
This page was really hard to draw - not because of anatomy, but also because I had to take long breaks from it or I'd get depressed... You start to feel a bit weird if you think about the best way to remove a human heart for too long... *cough*.
(For those of you interested: at first I'd have made him go straight through the middle of the ribcage - but then I watched the sacrifice scene of Apocalypto on youtube, and saw that of course it's way easier to cut under the ribs instead of having to break the bones and reach up to grab the heart -- Ok sorry, I'll stop, hope none of you feel sick now, haha.)

Very nice, I'm not sure of the correct way of how the Aztecs performed heart sacrifices myself, but I know the Maya (for their heart sacrifices) made the cut in the armpit or right below it, and reached for the heart that way. The act can be a bit shocking to some people, but after reading a bit, and having context around the ritual it makes sense. Who will be wearing the Ixiptla's skin?

That's interesting. Although i don't think it really matters much just exactly HOW they did it, except one wants to make a visualization of it. In Apocalypto the cut was made below the ribs, and those were supposed to be Maya if I'm correct. But I haven't seen the full movie yet, and have little to no knowledge about Maya culture, so I don't want to start a debate about accuracy and such...
I don't remember reading anything about someone wearing the skin, so... even if that did happen, it's not going to happen in BTOM.
