While they are somewhat less common than ballistic weapons due to higher production and maintenance costs, beam weapons are widely employed by most military forces in the Tarravon galaxy.EDIT: Oops! A beam rifle without a trigger, apparently. I was a bit short on time today and worked this up in a hurry.

May I suggest something unoriginal yet still relevant and innovative. Maybe you can add more details to describe the advantages that beam weapons have over more basic weapons, the roles they play in to explain why they are so widely available. I imagine beam rifles and similar weapons being favored for the option to use as a makeshift tool for cutting, welding and other situations outside of combat (similiar to how a star trek phaser works).
As for the design, it looks like a good start for more beam rifle designs despite the flaws. I see this being a more utilitarian tool, or a rifle that uses interchangeable parts with some sort of mining laser. A fairly decent piece of hard work.

Who says that rifles need triggers? IF the grip has a chip that detects another thing in the soldiers' glove that is linked to the soldier's head, the soldier could shoot the gun just by waving his finger or thinking it, as long as he's holding the gun. It would prevent foes from using your gun on you.

It is a sci-fi energy gun. It doesn't need trigger, it might as well be a button instead, or even a secure wifi connection with user's cerebral implants.

Just B.S. it and say the trigger is pressure mounted under shape grip memory material to create a more streamlined look.
