Description

Commission for Reticent-Stories on Tumblr, featuring his character, Bared! This fella is an older fruit bat, who according to the commissioner, “a mellow figure with a propensity for impish behaviors when folks aren't looking.” I find older characters interesting to work on, so this was fun.

When I saw this in the Notifications, I though it was a wolf-dragon hybrid.

Bats are relatively rare, and normally have their wings attached to their arms, so understandable! The wings on this guy are on his back due to clothing constraints.

Lovely job with the line work, the coloring, the pose, and the subtly with the facial expression. Keep up the phenomenal work! I also really like that subtle texture you have been running throughout most of your recent pieces. It gives it a more "animated cells" feel. If I may ask, what type of texture are you using to achieve that? Anyway, always looking forward to what more you produce, Tem!

Thanks so much! Regarding the texture, yeah I add it just because I feel it helps the art not look too digital, and as you said, even look like an animated cel.

The texture is achieved by making a layer filled with 50% grey, add noise to it by going to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, set the noise to Uniform and Monochromatic, hit OK, then finally set the layer you're on to Overlay. The pixels will either brighten to darken a smidge, but overall the image will stay the same values.

Aww, he looks sad. Though the description of him proves looks can be deceiving.

Nice work, Tem. I have a tendency to make all my characters look middle aged. Need to learn the right places for lines to give that aged look!

There's more to it than just this, but adding more interior lines makes characters look older! Less interior lines and they tend to skew younger.

Yeah. I'm still learning. Gots to get all the techniques!
