DETAIL SHOT: [link]Commission for , with his character dressed up in his medieval clothing.
Definitely happy with how this came out, in detail, composition, atmosphere, colors and more. This was a challenging piece and I enjoyed it.
Apparently Red is going to be turning it into a poster too.
Glad you like it Red. Was fun to do, thanks!

I like this. It reminds me of Earth Eternal, the MMO.

I remember seeing this in the DD list... and as I said before, it's one of the most deserving daily deviations I've seen so far!
It's their expressions I love most. Dauntless! (Or maybe they just overdid it on the mead again? )

Really? Because I had about three people say it wasn't good enough to be one.

To hell with them, because that's clearly not true.
You always get the people who do that. Jealousy, I call it.
I love this! And many others do too. ^^

That looks pretty great, you did a wonderful job on it. Who is the other character, is it you?

Well, I do it differently for backgrounds and characters. But since I'm assuming you mean the characters, what I do is:
1. Sketch the characters
2. Create a layer below it and add base colors (brown for fur, blue for tunic, etc)
3. Create a masking layer for the bases, and fill it in with a dark-dark-dark blue. I adjust the opacity of the layer to see whats underneath well. Then I erase away where I don't want any shadowing.
4. Add a similar layer, but this is to create the darks I can't achieve in the reduced opacity layer.
5. Create another layer above everything (again, masked to the bases) where I add all my values. I keep rendering and rendering with different colors until I'm happy with what I have.
For the background, it's basically the same, just minus steps three and four. And I do it all on one layer most of the time.
Then at the very end, I flatten it out and do touch ups, like smuding to achieve a fur texture, or dodging bright parts like the fires in this.
Hope that helps! I should make a tutorial sometime.

What else can I say that hasn't been said? I don't know how trivial this is, but the tree tops infront of the sky lighting looks incredibly real to me.
I do wonder what kind of mess those two have gotten into.
Is this your first DD?!

Thanks! The trees were rendered with just an ordinary maple leaf brush with some settings changed. Some people look down on that for some reason, but I noticed the artist who created this poster for Bolt used it, as well as the grass brush. So I figured, hey, why not.
And yes, it is.

Yeah, it really does look good, I love how you can use the lighting in an image. I'm in awe of the clothing, and of course the background too. Gratz on the DD.

it is painted very well, but it looks like you could be using more structure, especially in the hands... they are strange shapes. but really though, good work, congrats on the DD

Well done! Definately deserved the daily deviation.
Spectacular lighting! Great detail, particularly in the figures - both your foreground duo and your ghostly gaggle of threat. And are those tombstones I see in the background (my left, behind the ghosts).
Compostion wise, you may have wanted to center them (vertically) a little more; it looks like there's extra space at the top.
I love the hazy look of your ghosts, how they distort things seen through them. Also the realism in the flames and the sheen of the metal weapons.
Congrats on the DD!

Thanks very much! I'm glad you like it. As for the extra space on the top, perhaps a bit more. Not too much, since I don't want the top of the trees to intersect them at all. Maybe chopping off a bit of the sky could have helped.
And no, those aren't tombstones. xD They're intended to be shields.

Oops! The last sentence in the second paragraph should have ended with a question mark.
And "compostion" should be "composition".
(I shouldn't be allowed on the internet without spellcheck.)
