The detail in all the bodies under him is really good, especially their backs.

so, is this your take on him, or is this his description? My cousin and I have wanted to get into the Cthulhu books and the king in yellow has had us curious

A mere technicality here, but The King in Yellow is not part of the original Cthulhu mythos, in fact, he isn't even Lovecraftian. The King in Yellow originated from the book King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers. It kind of bothers me that lots of people think The King in Yellow was designed by Lovecraft. If you already knew this, I'm sorry for bothering you.

I knew it was seen as part of the mythos, and it wasn't lovecraft who made him but I didn't know who
thanks for the info though

My take... But I worked closely with Sandy Petersen, who is the expert in all things Cthulhu. He would give me a short description, then I would be able to pretty much go off and create what I wanted to. The only thing, I had to stick to, was yellow robes. After that I pretty much could design to my hearts content. I mainly wanted to create him as a king of undead minions, and make him creepy as possible, yet a bit regal.
BTW, my favorite Lovecraft story is "The Thing on the Doorstep".

Wait, this ain't the Old Monk boss from Demon's Souls ? I could have sworn it was. Exact same idea, minus the tentacle that is.

Lovecraft did it first. The two enemies in yellow (Old Monk and Xanthous King [Yellow King]) on the Souls series are very likely based on the H. P. Lovecraft character Hastur / The King in Yellow.

The King in Yellow was designed by Robert W. Chambers, not Lovecraft. It is a common mistake. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Well I'm glad to learn that. Lovecraft is in my to-read list, and has just upped a bit

WHY ARE YOU HIDDING A RESIDENT EVIL MONSTER AMONGST THESE CREATURES!?

no seriously is that some kind of easter egg ?

It was unintentional. I as just creating mutated undead abominations. I do see the resemblance now though. No Easter eggs

On it's own, it is an excellent illustration.
As for me, I always imagined the King in Yellow to be more... subtle.
But, of course (Pre)Lovecraftian mythos is an elusive thing. Β

Thanks, Yeah I wanted to reimagine him. There are many more illustrations out there where he more subtle. I was going for something like the creature from Pans labyrinth.
