What kind of clay could I use instead of the two part epoxy clay? Could I use just normal modeling clay because the stores where I live don't have epoxy clay? Please reply soon! I want to get a costume before a festival. Also, could you use acrylic paint on it then just seal it with modge podge or something? THANKS
~Midnight

Whatever type of clay you decide to use, it needs to be air drying and non-shrinking. If your clay shrinks at all, you will end up with cracks all over your shield by the time it dries. I use Apoxie Sculpt because it is very durable, doesn't shrink or crack at all, and it cures to a very hard finish in 24 hours.
Apoxie Sculpt isn't available in stores near me either. I buy mine through amazon.com. Magic Sculpt is a very similar product and it is more readily available in stores than Apoxie Sculpt is, so you might be able to find that in a store.
Yes, you can use acrylic paint. The blue, red, and gold paint I used were acrylics. You can seal with Mod Podge if you want, but I always use a spray finish to seal paint.

I did it in about 20 hours altogether. It was a few days worth of work.

Great tutorial! Is it possible to use craft foam instead of worbla? I don't exactly have the funds for worbla.

If you're not going to use Worbla, you could actually just skip steps 4-7 and leave the insulation foam uncovered. You'd just need to make sure your insulation foam is nice and smooth since it will be visible. You would also need to coat your insulation foam in a layer of wood glue. Apoxie Sculpt doesn't like to adhere to the foam on its own, but if there is a layer of wood glue over the foam, it will stick. Just be extra careful with you're shield if you're not using Worbla. Any kind of foam on its own isn't going to be very durable.
I'm not sure how attaching the straps to the back of the shield would work out without the layer of Worbla though. The Worbla gives a nice, solid surface to attach things to. If its just foam, it might not be strong enough to hold the shield to the straps. I've never tried it that way though, so it might still work out just fine.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm making my bf gifts relating to LoZ. I've only made his Link's cap, but I'm working on making his tunic and the rest of his attire and I've been looking for tutorials on how to make a Hylian Shield and I am so happy I found this one! One by one he's getting his just cause gifts, he loves the cap, haha.
Amazing work btw!
