Description So they tell me Kuvira's like Korra...
*Mako face*
I guess that makes Korra a bit like her too.

Jokes aside, I really like how the series contrasts these two!

You did a really great job with this. Exquisite pencil rendering. I daresay even better facial features than the animators did for the series. Really fantastic work.

There's one major difference between Kuvira and Korra. It's called The Moral Event Horizon, and Kuvira just crossed it like Caesar crossing the Rubicon.

Somehow, you manage to surpass the makers of the series. Seems to me better than the original, while staying with the exact same - or very similar - style, which makes the accomplishment even greater. The charakters seem perfectly captured, so I'm just in awe of the tremendous amount of artistic ability displayed here. Awesome work!

I took a few minutes before I drew Kuvira to consider if what I was trying to draw was even possible, given the repertoire of expressions we've seen on her. Thankfully, it turned out ok!

Shadow-Messenger In reply to Terra7 [2014-11-13 00:54:41 +0000 UTC]

In Kuvira's case, those lips actually look like it's hers. In Korra's case you can see it's Kuvira's, cause Korra's evil smiles are more mischievous than devious(Kuvira's has "Just as Planned" all over it, Korra's more like "I'm gonna shove ice down your undies and laugh my ass off"), but it's still well-drawn. It's like Kuvira possessed Korra or something. XD

Terra7 In reply to Shadow-Messenger [2014-11-25 07:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Actually, that's a good point. Korra's smiles have been more mischievous than devious.
They should just switch roles for the day, realize they're both in pretty demanding positions, and call it a truce.

Shadow-Messenger In reply to Terra7 [2014-11-27 04:01:18 +0000 UTC]

Hope they don't ruin Kuvira's character by turning it into Unalaq 2.0.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Terra7 In reply to Shadow-Messenger [2014-11-27 18:04:32 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean when Unalaq wanted to become the dark Avatar? I think he believed he could control Vaatu, because he could control spiritual energy well. Unfortunately, that didn't go too well (I assumed Vaatu took control of Unalaq when he became the spirit giant).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shadow-Messenger In reply to Terra7 [2014-11-28 00:22:47 +0000 UTC]

Now, I mean when they created Unalaq to start with. He's even worse than Ozai, completely flat and pathetic. There's no grand motivation or goal to sympathize with, he's just a power-hungry asshole that makes Loki look friendly. What I hate most is how he SOMEHOW managed to beat everyone he fights against! His death was too simple and peaceful! I wanted Korra to rip Vaatu out of him and then kick his ass all over Republic City, before he tried some funny trick that got him eaten by spirits or crushed by vines or debris.
Vaatu I actually liked. He's like the Spirit-Harbinger! His Badass Boast to Wan was totally boss.

"I lived ten thousand lifetimes before the first of your kind crawled out of the mud! (REAPER BLAST) It was I who broke through the divide that separated the plane of spirits from the material world! (REAPER BLAST) To hate me is to give me breath! To fight me is to give me strength! Now prepare to face oblivion!"

Np, it's good to see people take notice of how the characters have a relationship rather than the typical hero vs. villain bid.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Terra7 In reply to schattenman005 [2014-11-13 00:12:41 +0000 UTC]

It's why Korra has been particularly good this season, because the antagonists and heroes share a personal relationship, on top of fighting for the same things (balance, stability, security, freedom).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

schattenman005 In reply to Terra7 [2014-11-13 00:39:36 +0000 UTC]

That's true, it's probably why they had Toph explain the past villains since they represented those qualities.
However, my peeve is that I heard there isn't going to be much bending involved. As much as I like to see clever ways of ending wars, that doesn't make it much Avatar without the factors that make it a fantasy world. What do you think on this?
(Btw, appreciative of you responding back like this. Whether it ends here or not, what you see as you get on is my show of appreciation.   ).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Terra7 In reply to schattenman005 [2014-11-13 01:03:13 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Toph's explanation helped tie the seasons together. And, it's interesting to see Kuvira represent what the former villains fought for --equality (Amon), balance (Unalaq), and freedom (Zaheer). It's all coming to a climax. At the same time, it just won't feel like Avatar if there isn't bending involved. Will Korra have a re-match with Kuvira? I think that big fight can happen, but what'll change this season is that taking down the antagonist likely won't bring peace. It might have to do more with working with Kuvira, rather than taking her down.

(I appreciate equally that you've taken the time to chat, feel free to expand on the conversation when you have a moment ).

schattenman005 In reply to Terra7 [2014-11-13 01:39:43 +0000 UTC]

Interesting, yes that is one way to end the series. However, there seems to be a lot going on from the four (five?) episodes we've seen.

One is obviously the spirit vine, just what kind of weapon will be created from such an element? It might even cause a larger conflict than we can believe.

Two is the former heir of the Earth Kingdom (Empire). Just what part is he going to play in especially when he's driving one of our main characters, Mako, into insanity with his attitude?

Three is that although working with her is possible, Korra will have to understand why she saw her ghost on Kuvira's face. Meaning she had the poison out and understood the conflicts within her. Is that still haunting her or is there more at work, perhaps maybe a deeper relations than just a comparison between herself and the antagonist.

Four is why Asami and her father is playing into this. The last season, we haven't seen much of her. I think the creators might rectify this by adding her in along with her father, the man who began most of the machines we've seen throughout the series.

Just thoughts and question I hope you have time to look at. there's no need to reply to everything, so pick what you like because it's interesting to see a conversation like this going on.

Terra7 In reply to schattenman005 [2014-11-25 07:10:13 +0000 UTC]

The plot is quite loaded, I agree (only for the best, of course). It seems the spirit vines in Republic City might get violent after the destruction of the banyan grove tree, which won't spell good for Republic City.

And on the topic, I'm still trying to piece together what Kuvira will do with the spirit weapon. Will it be used like a deterrent, quelling the other nations from declaring war with her Empire, or will she actively deploy it? No doubt she might if the world leaders try to physically remove her from power. But is there more to it? What are her plans for Republic City? And what of Zaofu now that it's been annexed into the Empire.

Korra seeing herself (the Avatar apparition) in Kuvira was a great moment. She's very much fighting the Avatar version of herself; she hasn't come to terms with her duty to the world as that figure, knowing too well the physical trauma it's brought her. The past battles may be over but the battle within never ended...

Asami and her father might be hinting at a larger theme of reconciliation that the show tries to address: trying to forgive someone, whether that's possible or not. This ties into Suyin, who at the end of the season will either forgive Kuvira and Baatar, try to, or refuse.

Likewise. Apologies again for not responding sooner, but I would like to keep the conversation going.
