Psionics is the study of the natural phenomena known simply as "psionics", and its relation to any applications in science and technology. Psionics and similar phenomena occur in many cognitively advanced species, including almost all Human species and subspecies, and their source varies heavily. In Humans, it is still unknown if it is a specific region of the brain that produces psionic energy, or the brain as a whole. Psionic energy is highly mysterious, and it is generally accepted that psionic abilities originate from manipulation of particles and physics on the quantum level. When brain activity is recorded, all regions of the brain light up like a Christmas tree. Whenever a Human initiates a psionic or similar ability, all memories appear to be accessed at once, as well as almost all of the brain's active processing power, although individuals do not recall any abnormal feeling from using these abilities, although many inexperienced individuals do feel migraines for a short time afterward.

In Humans, the most basic psionic ability is that of empathy. Almost all Humans feel empathy for others in some way, this is a biological result of living as a communally-oriented species. Many technological alien species have developed feelings similar to empathy and compassion, it is in no way a phenomenon. What is a rare phenomenon is psionically-based empathy, which allows the empath to see into the minds of others, while only being capable of feeling their emotions.

Many phenomenal abilities have been associated with psionics. Levitation, hydrokinesis, pyrokinesis and the very famous psychokinesis are all examples of psionic abilities. Psionics is practiced primarily as a combat discipline. Plasmokinesis is regularly used by psionic soldiers. It involves the generation of a cool plasma shield, or "bubble", around a fire-team or vehicle, that completely disperses energy and plasma weapon fire, but allows organic and inorganic matter to enter, and slows the projectiles of kinetic weapons to non-fatal velocities. Psychokinesis can, when the individual is honed in enough on their abilities, lift heavy armor units, over a thousand times their size, and fling them aside. Osmosis is also an example that can be used in combat disciplines. It involves the slight, tempory shifting of molecules of an object and person, allowing the object or person the ability to pass through one another, but such a practice requires extreme discipline and focus, as the molecules of the object and or body must be held constantly during the transfer, otherwise, the molecular bonds of the object and the person will snap together and connect, causing forcing amputation of limbs or - in a case of transfer failure mid-torso or head - a traumatizing death as the person and object coeless on a molecular level.

Many materials are too dense to be passed through. Extremely rare and extremely mysterious neutronium is well-known as a material that no psionically-capable individual can pass through, no matter their training. The only modern material that is almost completely immune to being passed by osmosis-capable psionic individuals is advanced durasteel alloys, which is why many centers of government, and other important sites around the galaxy, are lined with advanced durasteel alloys, not only for protection against weapons fire and detonations but also against potential psionic assassins.

Telepathy, although seen as a taboo in almost all cultures (the thought of someone invading the mind of another makes even the most alien cultures recoil), which involves the invasion of another individual's mind to gather information and memories, is used commonly in criminal investigations in most Human cultures, but it is almost universally only used with the consent of the suspect or with some kind of advanced court order.
