The battle armor can be removed or mass-displaced, to allow Astrotrain to move in narrow spaces.

Just like other Triplechangers, Astrotrain can alter his body configuration, to adapt his alt modes for hostile environments or battle conditions.

Astrotrain's life before war is chronicled in Short Story: I'm Taking A Train .

Both the freight train and the cybertronian railways concepts were inspired by Dark Of The Moon: Rising Storm, the inspired comic written by brilliant author John Barber.
The comic showed DotM Astrotrain in his Cybertronian train mode, suggesting that Cybertron was full of railwais that he could easily travel on: this concept sounded both logical and bold, because no one ever dared to show Astrotrain's Cybertronian train mode before that (or so we believe... maybe in Japanese continuity...).
Sadly, Astrotrain did not make it to the big screen, and he had to "quit" the DotM continuity, but the concept lives on and is now part of Seeds Of Deception.
