Description
A fun caption for me to write utilizing one of my favorite Mythological Monsters, the Harpy. I'll probably write other harpy-based captions, as I came upon a bunch of good pictures. I especially loved this particular picture, and couldn't resist. Maybe I'll use it in a fun RP idea I have planned. Speaking of which, I, as always, do not take ownership of or credit for the picture, only the story accompanying it. This one was not a request, so sorry for those of you have sent in. However, this also means that I'm giving out a free instant-request to the person who answers the following quiz question correctly! If you don't know what an instant request is, just go here!Instant Request Quiz Time:
In edition 3.5 of D&D, Wizards have spell components that they have to use to cast their spells. One of these spells, Scrying requires two things. A focus, and spell components. There is a funny joke on what these two things are, one which requires basic scientific knowledge to understand. The first that can tell me what the objects are and what the joke is gets their free request. Make sure to use the wizard/bard/sorcerer version, not the cleric or druid version.
This question has already been completed by the obviously cool The answer was that through the combination of a lemon, copper and zinc wires, and a specially polished mirror, a Wizard makes a crude television with which to scry. Congratulations! You get an instant-request!

I always question mythology and how they make pretty much all creatures seem evil. I personally think a lot are like people, theres good and bad.

I'd have to disagree slightly on that. Remember that monsters aren't like humans. They can just be inherently evil. Although some races are more like humans in having a mix of good and evil, Japanese mythology has plenty of creatures like that, and Norse mythology had the elves and dwarves, and Greek mythology had a few non-evil creatures.

That's just how mythology works. There are creatures like that even if pure evil creatures do not exist in real life.

I just think things like Harpies and Lamia wouldn't all be evil

It depends on the myth. For example, in some myths, Harpies we're the servants if the gods, and not necessarily evil. In others they are pure evil. Lamias, in Greek myth anyway, are child-eating demons. Of course, if you're in your own setting thou can choose what races are good or evil.

I should probably also add this was the oke with most components, where the wizard would do something basically scientific to cast a 'spell' and call it 'magic.'

TF-Wizard In reply to IrateResearchers [2013-09-18 21:34:26 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's kind of a running gag in D&D.

The components are a specially-treated mirror, wire, and lemons. Β The joke is that to scry, the wizard creates a TV with a primitive battery.
