On the world of Gaea is a small kingdom that houses only a small volunteer force in opposition to many of the other realms within this mystical world of magic and technology.

But Fanelia remains respected above all others. Because it's King's hold a powerful legacy that spans from beyond recorded history.

Escaflowne is the greatest symbol of this legacy.

An ancient guymelef unmatched by even modern models, Escaflowne is a warrior machine that only the greatest of souls can pilot. Thus, each Heir of Fanelia must undergo a dangerous endeavor to prove their worth.

To slay a dragon and use it's beating heart to give power to Escaflowne.

It's latest holder for two years, Van Fanel, has used his machine to protect his people and eventually expand Fanelia's influence after the defeat of Zaybak.

So what brings this King and his fiancee to Angel Groove serving the whims of Seto Kaiba?

Actually Escaflownes other weapons lie in its two shoulder energist crystals. In a vision a whole bunch of Escaflowne's use these green shoulder crystals to destroy multiple floating fortresses. Also, Escaflowne's main power source, its red left shoulder crystal with the drag energist is made up of the same stone that Hitomi's pendant is made up of which has the power to grant wishes. Also, in one episode Escaflowne's energist crystal on its left chest side gives Hitomi a vision of Duek Freid's death. Basically that energist crystal is a massive version of Hitomi's pendant. In one episode that crystal also gives Escaflowne the ability to teleport to. Escaflowne's strength enables ti to grab the region of an enemy cockpit and crush it to. Also, if you notice, Escaflowne's great sword, which is its main weapon also can be magically charged up to deal greater blows. If you notice the progression of the damage that it does throughout the series increases as Van become one with his Guymelef. No wonder why the repair bill for fixing Escaflowne cost so much. Really Escaflowne's abilities arent really arent set. They seem to be able to match what the pilot of it wants.

To be honest, I never saw this show, but I did see the movie. Everything I know about the original show comes from a friend who owns the whole dvd collection, the movie, and the abridged series
