Description To get to this stage, you have to consider your values. When using reference as I did for this piece, it was good to really study the different areas of contrast and how values changed depending on the material I was painting. Its all about practice and studying, once you understand your process and how things work it becomes significantly easier and you can start working on your own material without reference as you will have a solid understanding of how things are supposed to look. This whole study tested my observations skills, in terms of proportions, placements and values. Its always good to keep a goal for what you want as an outcome of your study. ^^

Hello, I’m commenting for ProjectComment !

First off, great composition! I think I’ve seen the reference you used floating around on Pinterest, and this looks pretty accurate to it. I agree that doing value studies with reference is important for an artist to improve their skills ^^

Overall, it’s a well-balanced painting, but I think the most successful parts are the lighting and the eyes – the lighting is soft but bright enough, and the eyes are expressive and the most prominent part of the painting. The eyes definitely draw the viewer in. You also nailed down the anatomy very well. Especially her shoulders and neck area look fantastically realistic in proportions.

There’s some critique I would also like to give. Whereas the upper part of her face is great, the lower part is bit uneven. It’s not easily noticeable, but I thought I’d still point it out since I often have the same problem. I think in this case the nose leans a bit to the right in the end, and he mouth goes with it.

Since this is a study, I thought about comparing this to the reference. I managed find one that I suppose you used, and put it up on my stash: sta.sh/028fdmj5fchu . Changing between the two, I noticed how much darker the reference looks. This isn’t always good, but in this case, I think your work could use some more contrast, especially in the shadows in her hair and on the wall that she leans against. In this kinds of greyscale studies some black color can really make the difference. For the painting to really shine, some more highlights on her face could work as well.

Additionally, I think some darker linework could help make the painting more dramatic, like in the reference. The edge of her shirt in the reference is pitch black, and the contrast between her pale skin looks really good. That might just be my own preference, though.

In the end, it’s a great study! I haven’t done value studies in a while, but this inspires me to try it again soon! Keep up the good work

Hi!

I want to thank you so much for your detailed comment! I appreciate all the kind words you have for this piece as well as the thoughtful critique! ^^
I'm glad you know about the original reference but the image in your stash isn't the same as the one I worked with, which is this one here:
Β

Originally it had color but I added my own monochromatic filter on top of it as I just wanted to focus on values. But I do agree with what you said in terms of contrast and I typically try my best to utilize that to the best of my ability for my non photostudy works!Β
Thank you again for your lovely critique I do appreciate it ^^ and I am super glad I could motivate you to do more value studies haha!

No problem, I'm just glad if I'm able to help!
Ah I see, my bad! It's probably best to find a colorized pic first and turn it black and white ^^

Hi! IΒ΄m fromΒ  Β

A realistic drawing Many eons ago he did not comment on a realistic drawing <)

Starting with the anatomy in bust of the girl, it is very well done. The expression he makes and the way his head gives movement to the same drawing. The range of grays is quite balanced and allows a very agile drawing that does not feel heavy in terms of acromatic vision. And that's positive according to the art university where I'm going

You also have a very good command of the strokes and brushstrokes, especially in the clothes and in how the very blurred shadows are structured, about to become parts made in watercolors.

It is too excellent a drawing. Perhaps the only defect would be that the neck is a little longer than what is seen, but as I always say: Millions of virtues outnumber a single small defect. Your drawing is synonymous with excellent <3

The eyebrows look like they're not following the curvature of the surface. I think even painted on eyebrows reflect light to some extent.

Looking at it I totally see what you mean, I actually preferred to leave this piece in an unfinished state but yeah I should've rendered the eyebrows a bitttt more xD thanks for pointing it out! ^^
