Description Finally back in the humanized Planes-drawing saddle! Yeah this honestly took wayyyyyyyyyy too long to get done. And I literally finished this in two days! Ugh I am the queen of procrastination some days! So here we have Ripslingahh and the Big Dawg! XD These guys were at first somewhat tricky to visualize, but they turned out well. Part of the reason I haven't gotten around to doing more of these is simply that I've seen so much great Planes art, including humanized characters, that I was nervous if mine really were worth the post, and I worried that I might subliminally make my versions look like someone else's. But once I sat down with my trusty reference from my Planes magazine, I was able to make these two really fun and uniquely my own! And yeah trust me I never ever intend to steal anyone's concepts. Part of the challenge in this as well was just the fact that I was doing two distinctly different human males. I've been drawing a lot of critters lately and sometimes I've got to work to get the hang of something again after a while of not drawing it. But I'm quite pleased with the end result.

Ripslinger was one of the earliest humanizations I ever did. Some time before seeing Planes, I remember doodling a pic of him and Dusty facing off. And thus a lot of cues from that original drawing are still here today, mostly just in that of his jacket and fingerless gloves. His hair was probably the most challenging thing to do with him. I had originally drawn him with short spiky blonde hair, but now he has a blonde-tipped medium-length mop of jet black hair. Black is likely the color most humanizations of him have, but I really liked the idea of blonde hair. As most of the villains in the Cars universe seem to have black hair, I thought it'd be something different. And also, I sort of see Rip as a Lightning McQueen gone bad. Unlike Chick who was older and tired of playing second banana that led him to do the wrong thing, Rip allows his unquenchable thirst for attention, fame, and winning to drive him to the lengths he goes to to keep Dusty from winning. Lightning was pretty into the spotlight once as well, so you have to wonder if McQueen would've taken on a similar persona had he not landed in Radiator Springs and became the awesome car we know today. OK so that hopefully makes some kind of sense. But because black just made more sense according to his vehicular colors, I decided to just add the blonde accent. But yeah I think he turned out pretty cool! I need those jeans and shoes And yeah thank goodness I could access the DisneyCreate Planes Mashup Maker app... I was able to find all of Rip's stickers so I wouldn't have to attempt drawing them!

Bulldog was an entirely different challenge. After kind of failing the humanized Skipper from earlier, I knew I really wanted to do better at drawing older gents. And of course, he's technically not as old as Skipper, but I always intended to use gray hair on him (Soooo Skipper is dyeing his hair?? XD ). Ultimately, once I got in the subtle facial wrinkles and the fabulous hair, Bulldog came together pretty quickly. I completely failed on the shoes, I'll admit, but men's shoes that aren't boots or tennies are still an area I need to work on. And the color scheme was truly very difficult to make work... I mean, a red jacket, gray slacks, blue shoes, and a Union Jack turtleneck don't seem to match. But somehow our British friend makes it work! And overall he turned out honestly better to me than Rip did. Of course, that could just be because Bulldog's a nicer guy, but either way...

And yeah I definitely threw in the towel on the background... I was trying to go for the NYC tents in the daytime... but a lack of screencaps on my part and being too lazy to get out my Art Of Planes are to blame for it. Ah well. It still works! And now once I get Ned and Zed done, I think I'll move on our friends from Fire & Rescue! Woot!
