Description
Want luxuries? You won't find them here! The Land Rover is very much basic motoring 101, but at the same time that's all you need when supplies are short, spares are hard to come by, and you need a vehicle that could climb Everest during a snowstorm, being held together by an Elastic Band! The Land Rover was first conceived in the years following World War II, where the then boss of Rover took possession of an old American Willys Jeep, the kind that had been used in that horrific conflict to march from one side of Europe to the other in the hope that whatever the Allies needed to fight died along the way. Impressed by the Jeeps ability to go anywhere and do anything as he toyed with it on his estate led him to develop Rover's very own version, simply known as the Land Rover. A simple boxy design married with rough and firm suspension and an engine that would last forever, the Land Rover's intention was to be the perfect farmyard kickaround, only seen by the Rover Company as a stop-gap before the firm was able to see off the post-war rationing and start building more luxury models again.
What they didn't foresee was that the Land Rover would take the world by storm! Upon its launch in 1948, the Land Rover was bought up by pretty much every single nation in the entire world, being a real hit in the colonies of the British Empire. With the Land Rover, journeys to far off and remote locations could now be done faster and more efficiently than the Camels and Horses that had done it before. Throughout the ages the Land Rover has cemented itself as a byword for off-road excellence, being lightweight, consisting of a short wheelbase, and being endlessly tunable. In 1992 Land Rover claimed that at least 70% of all the Land Rover's they'd created were still working and on the go around the globe.
Since 1948 the car has spawned thousands of variants, including those based on the original itself, be they Ambulances, Breakdown Trucks, Commercial Lorries and Vans, Buses for remote islands in Scotland, Repair trucks, Airport and Airfield Fuel Tankers, and hundreds more! From its basic formula, the Land Rover has spawned many creations, including the luxurious Range Rover, the family oriented Discovery and the sporty Freelander, whilst the car itself has evolved over the decades into the Defender, still maintaining that original winning design that topped the mountains and forded the streams back in the 1940's and 50's!
