Description
Ta-da!I browsed a bit through dA and I couldn't find a tutorial on bird wings that really covered it ALL--from bones to wing shapes and feather groups. All the tuts I found seemed to assume that you were starting with some basic knowledge of how bird wings worked. I don't know if you are, so here's one that works from the ground up!
Yes, this is based off the tutorial style of the incomparable (Go read her tutorials on drawing humans; I promise you will learn something!) because I feel that it's a very clear and dynamic way to show people stuff. So yeah.
Other Stuff:
Interesting web sites, if you want to learn more:
[link] --Explore this site some--it has some really cool interactive stuff. Also that game! XD My bobolink always gets eaten halfway through.
[link] --some more in-depth stuff on the physics involved.
[link] --lots of info on wing shape and purpose!
Great reference books:
-Birds of Prey: Majestic Masters of the Skies by Paul D. Frost--glorious, two-page spreads full of raptor close-ups.
-Raptors of the World by James Ferguson-Lees and David A. Christie--what need I say?
-Reader's Digest Book of North American Birds -- beautifully illustrated, with cool tidbits of information about all the birds.
...and I don't want to hear that you don't have the money to buy books. Libraries need love too, and there is one near you--go get to know it!
All photos that are not from Wikipedia were taken by me. The canada goose picture was found here: [link] and the peregrine falcon here: [link] .
Phew. That was rather exhausting (and hopefully exhaustive!
Also: has a wonderful gallery full of images of birds in flight--go check it out, it's a great reference!
:EDIT: HOMFG A DD THANK YOU SO MUCH and !!!!!!

You know, looking through this tutorial, I wonder, what kind of wing shape does a hawk-eagle hav, as there seems to be a few of those. hum.

TheAntimonyElement In reply to goldblaze [2011-12-23 04:24:40 +0000 UTC]
That's actually a really funny question. XD It really depends on where the bird lives and hunts, since there is a lot of variation in the wings of different eagles, or different hawks. Hawk-eagles, however, are really just eagles, and as such would probably have long and broad wings. Or perhaps they have wings that are longer than a hawk's but shorter than the average eagle's.

the ornate hawk-eagle I'm pretty sure is just a eagle I think, also, yay feathered dragon, heh, I'm basically making a wyvern feathered character baised on the feather pattern of the bird.

Hmm...can you narrow it down at all? What are you having the most trouble with?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KerensaSnow In reply to TheAntimonyElement [2012-03-18 17:41:23 +0000 UTC]
Mostly the shapes. They appear very awkward looking
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheAntimonyElement In reply to KerensaSnow [2012-03-24 02:56:41 +0000 UTC]
Hmm...probably the best thing you can do is look at bird silhouettes, then. You can find lots of them on Google image search. Just take a bunch of pictures of birds in flight, and block out the shapes you see. The primary feathers (from wrist to wingtip and down) will form a soft triangle, while the secondary feathers will form a square or rectangle. Once you start looking for these shapes, you'll begin to see how different bird wings look and work.

Wow this was really informative and wasn't even what I was searching for! lol
I would like to point out that places like my college do not accept anything referenced from Wikipedia as it is not recognized as a reliable source of information given that one person can easily change information on a web page. Although I have found that most of the information on Wiki has been okay, I do have to agree that even the slightest thing that is off would not be noticeable to someone who doesn't already know all the information present on the page.
Really though I love this! It's great and I think you must have quite the passion for birds

TheAntimonyElement In reply to spartan316 [2011-12-14 18:35:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, I'm a huge proponent of the accuracy of Wikipedia...the few times that I've noticed an error and gone to change it, it's already been fixed by the time I clicked "edit." XD But in any case the only information I got from Wikipedia for this tutorial was some of the photographs themselves, since they are under the Wikimedia Commons and thus available for appropriate use. All the facts in the tutorial are things that I knew and verified or tips of my own devising.
And thanks, glad you liked the tutorial! Birds are kinda my thing.

Hehe. I did like it! it made me go sweet!
definitely if it's something I know a little bit about than it's not to big of a problem but the school officially doesn't allow it and frowns upon its use because the information is user input and thus can easily be falsified or misleading.
Personally I have been looking for useful references, mainly because I can't sit outside and see a bunch of animals or birds... lol

this is such a fantastic tutorial, great job C: i have birds at home, so everything here was really a review [though i did learn a little about those "molding" feathers, i forget their name LOL the ones that mold the wings to the back.], but my friend was asking for a critique on feathered wings, but when i tried to give her the critique, she yelled at me =/ then said that my art is unrealistic and stylized.
i kinda wanna show her this tutorial so she doesnt yell at me about my anatomy, but im afraid that she'll just be like "JUST DROP IT ALREADY" and not even look at it [she did that with my other attempt to provide a reference...]
this was a very informative tutorial, nonetheless. it makes me wanna draw feathered wings a lot more now xD

First off, thank you so much! I'm always so happy to hear back from bird lovers/owners. As for your friend, maybe you could just phrase it like, "I found this cool tutorial, take a look!" Don't make it seem like you're forcing it on her, just sharing it.
P.S: I think you mean "tertial" feathers.

lol my other friend suggested that same thing, but i feel its just more mature to drop the whole debate since she just gets angry whenever i bring it up :V
same difference i guess i was thinking tertiary from art class xD;
