Cu Chulainn (or Cuhullin in some readings) was the Irish Hero who appears in the tales of the Ulster Cycle, also present in Scottish and Manx lore. Originally born as Setanta, he earned his name when he killed Culann's guard dog in self defense at an early age, offering to become his guard until a replacement could be made. Defeating Queen Medb of Connacht and her armies singlehandedly at seventeen, he was destined for fame on the field of battle, earning the title "Hound of Ulster". His frenzy on the battlefield can be alluded to such legendary figures as Hercules or Achilles.
