Description In the continued effort to refurbish the cast and concept art of my long-running project, Pirates in London , here are two more of the main characters (One-Eye and Ranger Rick) set against a background of London Proper (c1966, of course).
I'm fairly pleased with this backdrop as it's the first time I've managed to pull off the city as it has gloriously appeared in my head all these years; pleased - but not too pleased to take a heaping hammering of critique so, as always, fire away.

would you believe this one was all on one layer??? you fool, of course it wasn't! i used a lot of em this time (turns out they're pretty handy, them layers).

dude, you're about as welcome to grace any of my machinations with your madskillz as Thor would be to join the Danes in combat. this'n is the descendant of Black Stripes (the point of which is for Arby to find One-Eye, incidentally). lemme know anything you feel like doing (coloring, characters, concepts, environments, storyboarding, whatever) whenever you feel like doing it -- this project is mapped in every direction just waiting to get its freak on.

Well, I could not possibly match your storytelling skills or character designs... so I guess I'd like to try and give my touch with sum colors?
Forgive my mental mess but.. at what point does BS become Pirates in London?

Your character designs are kickass, dude, I'd love to see your take on a couple characters in desperate need of a revamp. I'll send you some sketches and character descriptions and you can slash away at whatever strikes your fancy. I'll also whip up lines for something concepty and shoot em over. go berserker on em - just whatever comes to mind. I tend to ruin my lines when I start coloring em (no method), I'd trust them much more in your able hands.
After a few epic swings, a couple world wars, and several crew changes (gotta work in a whole bunch of friends I've slated to base characters off of over the past few years, including a certain Argentinian Viking Sea King), Arby, Dan and James catch up with One-Eye and, soon after, Black Stripes comes to a nuclear holocaustal climax.
It's amidst the gently-falling-ashen fallout that Pirates in London picks up (Dan and James, sadly, fail to advance).... like Dorothy, Arby and One-Eye then splash into a realm of technicolor and the saga gets landlocked in the underground city.

That's really nice, man. I love it! My only suggestion is to maybe put outlines on the cliff that they're standing on to make it stand out from the background a bit. That should make the background look more distant, too. I love One-eye!

thanks, you're definitely right about outlining the foreground so there's some degree of integration of the characters into the environment. i gotta try to get some routine of foreground outlines going on as i develop the look of this project - i always hated those cartoons where you could tell exactly what part of the background was going to be interacted with, because of the obvious non-painted-ness of it... but i love painted backgrounds. i think Ren and Stimpy (at it's better moments) mitigated this problem well, and Spongebob does also (though it's more simplistic).

I always hated that, too. On a commentary track for a Simpsons episode, they said the reason why that happened was because of the layers overlapping. So, say a locker door that was about to be opened was on one layer and it was painted the same color as the lockers on the background, the locker that was about to move would come out to a different shade because of the overlapping layers. Now, they use computers to color, so it's not a problem anymore.

I always liked the "Ren & Stimpy" backgrounds, too and "Spongbob". "Venture Bros.", "Metalocalypse" and "Archer" all have great backgrounds. They're digitally painted on computers, but they look great.

haha, "Metalocalypse" sounds awesome just from the name - i'm downloading that right now. I'm long overdue to check out Venture Bros too, so i'll at least get the torrent.
have you seen Korgoth of Barbaria or Superjail yet? both crucial views.

Oh, two other cartoons to check out are "Chowder" and "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack". They both have great styles and painted backgrounds.

Yeah, Korgoth was funny. I wish it had been picked up. I didn't care too much for Superjail, though. I didn't dislike it, but I thought it was kinda repetitive. I didn't like the animation style that much, either. There's a new show that just started on Comedy Central called "Ugly Americans" that uses that style. I dont' care for the style, but the show might be funny. They've only aired one episode so far, which was pretty good.

Dude, Metalocalypse is the SHIT. It's even serving to melt the anti-Metal barrier of my special lady who shies away from anything harder than Conor Oberst... and I can't stop saying "brutal".
I love the backgrounds in Chowder and Flapjack, too, though the shows themselves aren't quite raw enough.
Superjail is formulaic for sure, but the pure insanity of it scores points on my chart.
Throw me your email, eh? I just worked up a 'Painter 11 for Photoshop Users' tutorial for ~Viking-Heart which you may be interested in checking out.

Yeah, I've been using'brutal' a lot, too. I loved the first season of 'Metalocalypse', but I didn't care much for most of the second season. Towards the end, it got better, though. The third season has been good so far. (heh, "Go forth and die" just came on Jango while I was typing this!)

I've been pretty disappointed with the fourth season of 'Venture Bros.' I hope it gets better. The first three seasons were so great.

I understand the appeal of 'Superjail'. I have some friends that love it. I prefer more story driven shows than weird surreal stuff like 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force' and such.

I can definitely use a tutorial for Painter. I downloaded a trial for Painter 11, but I got busy after I installed it and my time ran out before I could really use it. I'll try again soon. It did seem to run better than 10 did.
