Description
Orginal here . I didn't just use this photo, there were actually two others that had subtle differences in the contrast and overall boldness. This was done last December for my drawing class in college. I know I'm far from perfection and need to keep working on drawing... especially when it comes to proportions and blending... If there's anyone out there with some tips or any advice I'm listening

I always want to know if he was bald when i look at that pic. As for shading and blending, I tend to just work in layers slowly making areas darker. You already have a definable light source from the references, so you can just elaborate on it. For the blending, i'm a fan of tissues (no aloe, or lotion, or anything else,) and always avoid using your fingers to smudge. make some impossible to alter spots due to oils.
Hope that helped you some, and if you want to know more/less, just say so

Thank you for the advice! Duh, I don't know why I thought using my fingers was a good idea, lol. What about when it comes to proportions? That's another big challenge I have, when I use references it's so hard to get everything so precise.

Well i only found out the whole finger thing from experience, so i thought i would save you the many painful mistakes.
Now for the proportions, i just eyeball everything and say that looks right. There are books you can use for proportions and such, but i'm am just good at recreating from memory. If you want a good book on faces, or certain body parts, or just anatomy in general, i can ask around and make some suggestions.
Now as for using a reference, the name alone tells you everything you need to know. All you are getting from the reference is the very general stuff (shapes, light source, ideas.) Or at least that is how i use them. When it comes to your finer details they are usually easy enough to recreate with out being the exact same as the picture and not have anyone notice the difference.
If there is anything else feel free to message me on my page, but i feel i have used up enough of the space on your picture comments. That and sorry for the mini-book i just wrote

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I tend to focus more on getting everything as accurate as possible, which I probably shouldn't do. It definitely makes drawing very frustrating at times.
No no, I appreciate it

Well i do know people.... very patient people with huge amounts of skill... that can sit down and copy a photograph down to the smallest details. But i feel that a true artist should also be able to take a photo of something and then change it and make it their own. Not to take away from the skill it takes to recreate something, free hand, to perfection.
