Description
UPDATE:This is the main tool for blending I used, also used this solely for step E.
I've updated it since then, but this is how it was when I used it for this tutorial. Hope that helps.
A friend of mine kept telling me about how they were unsatisfied with their painting skills. And so I was inspired to do this, even though I'm not so sure I should be giving advice in this depth to anyone. ono" I'm still learning how to paint myself. My friend isn't the only reason I decided to do this, however. I remember when I first tried my hand in semi-realism and I went scouring the world wide web looking for tutorials. I found very few, and the one that had the most potential didn't make a whole lot of sense to me and my paintings came out horrible because of my lack of understanding. This tutorial has obvious facial errors and isn't of the highest quality, but hopefully it's easy to understand (assuming you can understand my chicken scratch) and gives you a proper grasp of the basics. It's, in short, just a sketch rendered in skin tone, colored in, then blended. A process repeated with different colors until it looks natural. I did a mysteriously gendered character for you in Paint Tool Sai, but I'm more than certain that this process can be completed with any other digital medium as well. Happy painting, I hope my derpy drawing helped! :]

I used my brush, watercolor, and the blur I all have uploaded in my gallery to do this. I used my blur sparingly, and just to smooth out lightly what I had already blended using my watercolor tool.

Oh gosh! This is amazing!
You don't know how LONG I've been looking for a tutorial as good as this!
Other tutorials confuse me with their tech-talk lol
This one is simple enough to be followed on any program!
Thank you SO much for this! (;A;`)

No problem! Honestly, that was part of the inspiration for this tutorial. I had to figure it out on my own, by studying refs and practicing, as well as just taking what I know about traditional and adding it to digital. That's because I had the same problem as you.
Most tutorials are just too hard to follow, especially for those like me who are self-taught.
I'm glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for this! Could you maybe do an eye painting tutorial please? Sorry if that's already been asked...

Sure, I'll do one. I have been asked before, and I was just thinking about that first thing when I woke up... I was asked to do several and haven't done them yet. So I shall! This shall be my goal today.
(It's no problem by the way. I enjoy taking requests like this, it's just a matter of getting around to them, haha.

I use my watercolor tool a lot, it can be found in my gallery. The only thing I changed on it is that I turned the min size all the way to a hundred so that it's bigger. I fiddle around with blurs... I had one I found on DA that worked pretty well, so I'm trying to recreate it on my own terms. [link] It can be found in here somewhere, I think.
Mostly, what works is rotating those to blend. After setting the shades, I use my watercolor to blend mostly then I like to smooth it out with a blur to get softer shading. Using the tool to pick up colors, water-dropper or something like that, works well to pick up the colors created after using the watercolor tool, before we use the blur. Using these colors in variation around the picture will help it look more realistic due to the varying shades.
Sorry if this doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I plan on doing a tutorial of this later, since I was already asked some time ago.

The only problem I really see with it is that you blend the hair. Typically, you aren't supposed to.

Just draw the lines, and don't blend them. :] I will do a tutorial to show what I know. (Which isn't much but still)

Um, what did you use to blend? Because all I have is like, the smear brush and a ton of blur filters
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TheComicStream In reply to Art-Gem [2012-05-06 22:27:10 +0000 UTC]
I used my watercolor tool to blend, blur to smooth some parts out. Depending on your tablet settings, it may not work the same for you though. I tried it on my friend's tablet, same make of Bamboo, and it came out too soft.
You can find my watercolor settings in my gallery, along with my blur settings if you want to use them.
