I gave the greenish blue waters a casual glance, seeing as my reflection projected a drop of indifference. This river sort of cast a somber glow to anyone who peers into it, I however, think otherwise. For some odd reason, I always ‘knew’ that these waters gave more of a delightful vibe, something that others didn’t see or understand in that manner. I always felt warmer or at least belonged.

“A penny for your thoughts?” Griffon, a tall lanky fellow spoke softly to my left. He shuffled his weight slightly on the stairs besides me, trying to not to disturb the water in the process.

Pulling my knees to my chest, I wrapped my arms around them, losing myself in deep thought. “When can I become a skeleton?” I lamented. Griffon chuckled softly. He reached over and tasseled my hair with his bony hands.

“Eventually.”

“Alright,” I sighed. I looked away momentarily before beaming at him. “Can I go see him?”

He eyed me closely. “If he gets pissed, you have to leave.”

“I know.”

“Griffon!” a familiar voice rang out from behind us. Ron came up and smacked the said reaper on the shoulder. “We have to get going. Stop lollygagging.” I turned my attention to them, as they shared an intense staring contest with each other. Griffon sighed and whipped out a long, black cloak out of thin air. Ron did the same and together they clad themselves in darkness. The both of them conjured their long, dangerous scythe into their hands.

“See you guys later,” I muttered. Ron and Griffon nodded and disappeared from sight. After that I stood up from the stairs that wade into the river Styx. I took off running towards the swirling stairs that led downwards, deeper into the world of hell. The steps were slippery and steep, but I didn’t mind. I was used to them since I fancied to visit the lord of the dead every so often. Finally, I made to the bottom. At the end was a door, Hell’s Gate.

As I stretched my knuckles to the door, it opened quickly, a figure whose shoulders were hunched up tight and his body stooped up awkwardly. He had skin of cartoon red, and thick black outlines with a set of brilliant silver eyes glared unimpressed down at me. His shoulders were hunched and had a nasty sneer upon his face. Before I could utter a word, he cut me off with a frown.

“I’m very busy.” Elias, the lord of the dead grimaced. He passed me, while a few dozen little winged devils went whizzing around him. They held up parchments of paper for him to sign, yet he merely treaded upwards without having a care in the world. I sprinted up behind him.

“I just came to visit for a second.”

“Times up,” he said, absentmindedly. I puffed my cheeks and crossed my arms. “Don’t pout, you’re a big girl.”

“Don’t treat me like a child!” I hissed.

“With all honesty, I am older than you in so many ways. Which means, you are a child. Suck it up.” We’re halfway up the spiral of stairs. I let it slide and hurried after him. “Besides, you’re not allowed to be here. Where’s Death, he’s supposed to be taking care of you.”

For as long as I could remember, I have had numerous arguments regarding who I belonged to. It truly made me upset that gave me a clenching in my heart. I wasn’t some sort of object. It was disgusting. Everybody kept claiming that I was Death’s child ever since he saved me once upon a time. I didn’t exactly remember much of my previous life, but I could say that it wasn’t exactly pleasant. Since then, I have become part of Hell’s family.

“I wanted to visit you because you’re always so busy. You hardly get any attention from anybody else.” I said slowly. Elias stopped and turned swiftly to look at me.

“Oh, I get plenty of attention. It’s ignoring the part that is difficult for me. Everyone is constantly sinning. It’s a pain in the ass to deal with.” He clucked. The Devil with silver eyes flipped his ashy black hair to the side in arrogance. He turned his back to me and continued to climb upwards. I glanced at him. Even when I could see the back of his head, I could tell that he wasn’t grateful for the job he was forced to have. My hand found his, slightly brushing against his stone-cold hands.

Elias whipped his head with a death glare, pulling his hand away.

“Sorry,” I whispered slightly. I wasn’t offended in the slightest, it was just that he seemed lonely for a moment. But I guess that moment wasn’t the perfect time to be bonding. “You just appeared to be –” he cut me off.

“I’m perfectly find by myself. Even if I’m shrouded by unwanted attention. I don’t need your pity!” Elias spat. “Go and wait for Death, you are his child after all.” He remarked, but little did he know that I was on the brink of a meltdown. I hate being felt like I belong to somebody when I belong to myself and myself only. I gritted my teeth and shouted.

“I hate being treated like this, like I’m some sort of unwanted thing that nobody wants. Nobody owns me, not you, not Death, NO ONE.” I declared.

Suddenly, a monstrous crack was heard from above, which seemed impossible since Hell was further into the Earth’s core than anyone could think. We both shot our heads up and saw the abyss with a large white crack across the skies. Golden light streamed from it and cascaded in our direction. I heard Elias hissing at my side. Out of the blue, he tugged me into a hug and pulled me close. The golden light rained down and latched onto my body entirely, grasping onto my wrist and ankles. I let out a yelp, as it teared my embrace with the Devil.

Elias cursed and muttered underneath his breath. He reached out for me, as I desperately attempted to hold onto his lingering fingers until a sound of a bell broke our release. I screamed, as the light lifted me to the reddish and orange hues of Hell, away from the place I once called home.
