The White December 2023

Phase One
Gyulakeszi to Wolfsberg

Distance: approximately 250 km

Weather forecast and Description:

The journey starts with a relatively flat phase, following the plains of the Carpathian Basin for some days towards the Austrian border and further towards the mountains. There are some windy channels on this route and one can encounter road-blockages due to windswept snow piles. Temperatures are moderate between +2° and -7°. On a sunny day some thawing can be expected too, careful with the mud-slides.

Entry Picture:

As always, reference pictures are provided at the “Resources” section of this journal. Draw your pair face the windy plains, riding over stormy fields and  land-roads between the vast farmlands. Optionally you can depict a sunny day where muddy puddles take over the footing. It is possible to come across shepherds or cattle.

Jamie and Einar are taking advantage of a sunnier day to have a bit of a play and burn off some energy in-between the colder windier days they've otherwise been riding through.

Jamie is also taking the opportunity to practise riding to Dusty's skeggas as he's still not overly used to the gait.

---

It had been a pretty cold and windy start to their journey so far. The laneways they’d traversed were like little gale channels sending the wind roaring through them.

A few days in they lucked out, waking to a bright sunny morning. Tacking up the horses after a quick breakfast Jamie and Einar let the horses walk out a sense of bright energy filling them. They passed a pair of ravens and waved as the black birds lifted off and flew over the paddocks and away from them.

“The snow seems so bright this morning,” Jamie said, using a hand to shade his eyes.

“Might even have some melt later if it keeps up like this,” Einar said looking at the glistening snow.

“Ah. My favourite. Slushy snow.” Jamie said with a shudder.

Einar laughed, “Better than just ice.”

“But is it though?” Jamie asked deadpan turning to look over to Einar.

Einar chuckled, “Come on. I think we’re all warmed up enough for a trot, besides the slush is alright for a bit more speed, certainly more so than ice.”

Jamie whooped in excitement urging Dusty out of his fast walk and into a Skeggas. The gait was smooth but certainly odd. While he’d ridden Dusty quite a bit these last few months he was still getting used to the stallion’s gait.

“Let’s go!” Jamie yelled sitting up a little to encourage Dusty faster.

“Hey! What happened to a trot?” Einar called as he urged Aurora into a canter to catch up.

“Come on!” Jamie shouted back urging Einar and the two dogs faster as they sped along the narrow country road.
