PART 1: You are here!PART 2: Aussie Basic Colors Part 2
Australian Shepherds have several color variations, but in this image, we're only going to be talking about the Australian Shepherds' STANDARD colors; meaning, the only colors allowed in Conformation shows.
Black & Red - these are the only two recognized, accepted colors. I have also shown the three extra varieties of each base color.
Black Bi w/ White
Black Bi w/ Tan
Black Tri-Color
Red Bi w/ White
Red Bi w/ Tan
Red Tri-Color
Black is dominate to Red - which means, in order to produce any Red puppies, the puppy must carry two copies of the gene that causes Red. For example, we'll use "B" for black, and "b" for Red. Black that carry one copy of the Red gene 'b' is called "Red Factored". If a Red Factored Black dog is bred to another Red Factored dog, or even to a Red dog, there is a % that the litter will have Red puppies.
BB - Black
Bb - Red Factored Black
bb - Red
BB x BB - all black dogs
BB x Bb - all black dogs - 50% red factored
Bb x Bb - 75% black / 25% red (of those black dogs, 50% will be red factored)
Bb x bb - 50% black / 50% red (all black dogs will be red factored)
bb x bb - all red dogs
